HILMAN MINX PHASE V 1951 LHD VERY RARE! FASCINATING HISTORY! For Sale (1951) The name Minx first appeared on a Hillman car in 1932 and the first unitary construction models ran from the early 1940’s until 1957 when they were replaced by the “Audax models”. The early fifties cars had side valve engines and went fairly well with a top speed of 70 + mph and reasonable economy.
This car is a 1951 “phase V” version finished in maroon red over black. The model only ran for 16 months and 67,000 were produced although very few survive. This is the only LHD one on the owners club records. Originally ordered from Rootes in London for a British lady by the diplomatic service in Paris, it was registered on the 23/07/52 and it remained in her ownership until 2000! Clearly a keen motorist, she toured Europe and even the U.S in the car, originally registered 434TT2Y, in Paris. Since 2000 it has been owned by an enthusiast who carried out many improvements including a full engine re-build and regularly showed the car, then from 2006 it was dry stored as part of a collection. We have carried out a re-commissioning and it is now on the button and running perfectly.
The body is in beautiful condition with a high quality paint finish and the underside is also excellent. The 1256cc side valve engine runs sweetly, the 4 speed column change gearbox works as it should and on the road it runs and drives surprisingly well considering it is nearly 60 years old - looking at the history it seems likely that the indicated 60,000 miles may well be correct. The interior is, as you can see in reasonably good order, the seats are good but some of the other trim is showing signs of wear as you would expect.
This Minx comes with a very detailed history – virtually everything since the mid 60’s including many MOT’s, service books and handbooks, newspaper articles about the car, many bills and photos including detailed photos of the engine completely stripped.
This is a very rare Hillman Minx V with a fascinating history. It comes complete with 12 months MOT, 12 months classic (free) tax and is ready to use. The number VUU 62 is transferable and clearly of some value but I do not want to sell it separately.
