1800 ES estate
In 1972 came the last model, the 1800ES, a hatchback or station wagon version with an all-glass tailgate; the engine was downgraded to 125 bhp (92 kW) by reducing the compression ratio with a thicker head gasket (engine variant B20F); although maximum power was slightly down the engine was less "peaky" and the real-world performance was actually improved.
[edit] End of the line
For the last model year, 1973, only the 1800ES was produced. Total production of the 1800 line from 1961 through 1973 was 47,492 units. Production ended on June 27, 1973 although Volvo was in negotiations with Sergio Coggiola concerning a possible P1800ESC.
While Volvo never produced factory convertibles of the 1800, these were produced in the aftermarket.
[edit] Influence
The all-glass tailgate on the ES-model would prove to be very popular with future Volvo-designers. A similar design was used on the Volvo 480, and on multiple concept cars. The Volvo C30 also uses this design.
The 1800ES traced its roots directly back to the Jensen-assembled P1800 sports coupe of 1961. Designed by Swede Pelle Petterson and prototyped by Italy's Frua, the steel unibody P1800 exhibited a Ferrari-like nose and a taut, low roofline; trendy at the time were the car's chrome-accented tailfins. Powered by the rugged 1,780cc, 100hp B-18 four-cylinder, the P1800 would be renamed the 1800S (signifying the shift in production from England to Volvo's home country of Sweden) and 1800E (Einspritzung, or fuel-injected, auf Deutsch) in 1964 and 1970, respectively.
Despite its sporting appeal and consistently high build quality, the 1800 was getting long in the tooth by the time that it entered its second decade. Volvo executives decided to invest a small sum to freshen the product without the expense and tooling of a complete redesign, and in the process created a fresh and stylish sports wagon. The 1800ES, as it was known, was sold alongside the 1800E coupe in 1972, and was the only 1800 variant available in 1973, the model's last year.
