1929 1100cc Riley Brooklands – Reg. GJ18

This Riley Brooklands racing car originated as an early chassis. Registered GJ18 the car was built as a complete aluminum body “works “ car. Riley Brooklands production would eventually total approximately 90 of the very special speedsters of which very few were aluminum bodied. GJ18 subsequently received a Riley-works race engine of specific order in specification for the Riley factory race team entry at the Phoenix Park Irish Grand Prix in 1930/1931. Officialy registered GJ18 in 1930, the Brooklands was sold to Whitney Straight in 1931 and became his first proper racing car. During 1931 Whitney Straight campaigned GJ18 at several events at Brooklands and Shelsley Walsh. During Whitney Straight’s ownership the workshops of Thompson and Taylor maintained the car for his competition use.

In time Whitney Straight sold the Riley Brooklands as it came under the use of Denis Jenkinson. He drove the car from the late 1930’s into the 1940’s. During his stewardship Jenks wrote an article in Autocar Magazine, July 1943 issue, describing his driving experiences with GJ18. This Brooklands continued to be campaigned through the 1950’s and was subsequently sequestered away during the 1960’s with the intention of returning the Brooklands to her former glory. GJ18 was taken apart and only partially restored languishing in a garage for the next 40 years with the restoration project never being completed. The Brooklands was finally sold in unrestored but very complete condition to Greg Johnson in 2003. After 3 years of comprehensive research and restoration GJ18 now stands as she was raced by Whitney Straight in 1931. The Brooklands debut was an appearance at the Le Mans Classic and the Le Mans Legends races. Now fully sorted and ready to go or show GJ18 was recently campaigned at the Monterey Historic races 2009.

This very original, historied and documented Riley Brooklands is now offered for purchase including 4 crates of extra parts. A very large history file including original buff log book, original articles, correspondence with a friend of Denis Jenkinson’s who was part of the scuderia they shared the Brooklands in, and copious restoration documentation are available upon request to serious interested parties.
