Split Screen Single Cab VW pickup Italian barnfind For Sale (1965) edit C112224 | | | Just found this amazingly cool, totally unmolested, rat look Splitty Single Cab Pickup in a barn near Turin. It only hit Britain a month ago, and it has been off the road for over 25 years according to the seller. I bought it for me and my son to run around Devon in, but I am moving house at the moment, so I am putting it up for sale if anyone wants to take it off me.
The engine starts and runs nicely - we put a battery on it and some fresh fuel in the other day and it fired straight up (just like Woody Allen's Beetle in the film 'The Sleeper'!).. The truck has no MoT or documents at the moment (it is a barn find, remember!), but the registration is dead easy - you just get a letter from VW confirming the ID and age, and an MoT, and then apply for a registration number and (free) tax disc - it is a very easy and straightforward process. The MoT shouldn't be too much of a big deal either - it will need some welding (e.g. to the sills, outriggers and B posts - see pic), but there is no cancer and it is all easy work (which is why I bought it!).
Most of the panels are easy to get (e.g. from Klassic Fab) if you want to turn it into a concours winner - although if a vehicle ever needed leaving rat look this was it. It will need brakes and tyres and whatever else the MoT man says it needs (e.g. a rear light!), but the steering seems nice and tight, although I have obviously not run it yet. I have put a pic of one of the tyres in so that you can see how old it is, and therefore how long the truck has been off the road - it is a 'Town and Country' one, and those have been unavailable for at least 25 years to my knowledge (I used to use them myself until about 1986!).
And please understand that this is a straight and unmessed-around-with Splitty - it is not like the many worn-out ones you see for sale that have been imported from South American banana republics with such dreadful roads that they have had a terribly hard life and are absolutely shaken to bits and worn out. This is from Italy, a modern and sophisticated European country with a lovely, hot climate! And it has been off the road for over half its life!
I am also throwing in a rat look sun visor with it (brackets included but not in the pic), and I might also throw in some other accessories if you twist my arm (e.g. a wirbulator, Helphos suction spot light, Brexton tray, dash tidy, Fulton mirror visor or whatever, by negotiation (and depending on how much you offer me for the truck!). I have a big collection of 50s and 60s accessories and I am supposed to be thinning down the collection (my wife says!).
To sum up, if you don't buy this Splitty off me I will just keep it myself and use it to run around in. I think it's the coolest thing I've ever seen. It still has the original red Italian goods vehicle stripes on it, and the cab is lovely except for the fact that the driver's seat has been re-covered at some time. If you want to come round and have a peek at it, I am based about 5 miles south of Exeter just off the main A30 to Newquay and Polzeath!
