First and foremost this Seven is not a clone, replica, tribute, or anything of that nature. This is a Genuine 1972 Lotus Seven Twin-Cam model. This Seven is one of the last built by Lotus before Caterham Cars bought the rights to produce the Seven, it was manufactured by one of Lotus' subcontractors, Steel-Brothers of New Zealand .
I found this S4 IV Lotus without an engine and transmission I decided I could tailor the Seven to my specs. My good friends at Groma Race Fabrications who specialize in vintage BMW race cars stripped the car down to the frame, re-enforced and triangulated the frame, built a hefty roll-cage to further stiffen the car and based on competition Seven design protect the driver from side impact.
A 1.8 litre engine and a 5 speed transmission from a 70's era BMW 318i were rebuilt utilizing a M crank, over-sized valves, and a electromotive direct injection system programmable via laptop computer. Finally to complete all this the car was turbo-charged subsequently increasing power to 225HP at 6 lbs of boost at 6500 rpm. This could easily be bumped up to 275 HP by increasing the boost to 9 lbs still keeping the rpm below 7500, but for street use its current configuration is more than enough. The Lotus weighs approximately 1550 lbs.
The suspension remained basically unchanged since these cars were known for their superior handling. Adjustable coil over shocks and springs replaced the original shocks. Lotus enthusiasts will instantly notice the modifications to the bonnet, this was done professionally to maximize airflow to the massive intercooler. The aluminum over-sized radiator was also modified in the nose for maximum airflow.
This car was built for road racing and rallying. I bought it with no drivetrain, just a heartless rolling seven and built it from the ground up. Most everything is new, I can not stress this enough and is often overlooked in vintage cars, new power brake booster, new wiring, complete of VDO gauges, upholstery, paint, new Superlite wheels and track/street Yokohama Advan AO48 tires (the wheels and tires have no more than 50 miles on them (in fact note the first picture below, tires still have the markings from the manufacture on them) Quick release Sparco steering wheel and 4 point harness.
