Mercedes 230CE W123 coupe For Sale (1984) edit C119104 | | | Thistle Green, Green cloth interior. 5 Speed Manual. Alloy Wheels, Electric Windows and Sunroof. Mileage 118,000. MOT to 18-01-2010. Taxed to 31-10-2009. Original owners manual and service book with the car. The service book and several old MOT certificates support the indicated mileage, but as the car is 25 years old and has had 5 previous owners I cannot guarantee its accuracy.
The car has been mine since May this year. I bought it on impulse because I had always wanted 230CE since they first came on the market in 1981, and this one was cheap. It had been stood for some time, as the previous owner had not had the time to use it due to work commitments (according to the MOT certificates it has only done 17,000 miles in the last 11 years). When I bought it the brakes were serviceable but noisy. I had the rear discs and pads replaced by the local Mercedes specialist at a cost of over £300.00. The other problems were that the drivers window did not go up fully, which was cured by a second hand mechanism (£45.00) and the sunroof had been sealed with silicon mastic in an attempt to stop water leaking into the car, despite this, water came in every time it rained, which I understand is a common problem with this model. Since I have owned it I have cleared out the drain channels in front of the windscreen, repaired the drains from the sunroof tray, and freed the sunroof. The seals along the lower edge of the windows are in poor condition, and are repaired with duck tape.
The car does not let water in at all now, despite the fact that it stands outside, as I do not have a garage.
The car has been completely reliable mechanically, it has always started first time. The known faults are that the rear footwells are rusted as a result of the water leaks in the past, the blower only works on slow and medium speed, and the drivers seat cover is dirty has a repair patch on the outer edge of the back rest. Both front seats are stained from water dripping from the sunroof, though it may be possible to clean the passenger seat cover. The back seats are in good condition. The rear near side window does not go down fully, (again a fairly common fault, can be cured with a replacement mechanism). While the garage that overhauled the brakes had the car on the ramp they noticed that there were rust holes above the rear axle that in their opinion would require attention before it would pass the next MOT. On the other hand the car had done less than 200 miles since the previous MOT, so this may or may not be the case.
I am selling it because I have had my summer fun out of it, and to be honest I can’t really justify having 2 cars.
