FORD SCORPIO 2.9 24V COSWORTH GHIA AUTO (36000 miles) 1995 M Reg, Incrediby clean, and rare, example of a Scorpio 24v Cosworth Ghia with just 36000 miles from new. Nantucket grey metallic with Scala Raven velour trim. Factory fitted upgraded 12 spoke 16" alloys with 225/50 R16 tyres.

Introduced in late 1994, the last of the Scorpio (Granada) model range was launched to a distinctly luke warm reception by motoring journalists and the buying public alike. The Granada had always been Ford's top of the range, luxury and executive model, always retaining a certain understated elegance combined with, in the upper models, equipment levels second to none. The previous Granada had been launched in 1985 and was in production until 1994, gradually evolving through the years with minor facelifts, numerous changes to specs. and available options and widely enhanced engine choice. The model was conservatively styled, an old 'stager' with a firm following and was commercially successful. The new model, now badged Scorpio across the range (as opposed only to the top of the range cars previously) was unusually styled and quite 'americanised' in it's visual impact, you could imagine Mulder and Scully clambering out of one in the X-Files !

However, the styling did not detract from what was overall an excellent car, more than fulfilling everything that was to be expected of the top of the range Ford. Mechanically, the range topping vehicles were fitted with the 2.9 litre 24v Cosworth engine, designated type 'BOA'. The iron cylinder block took it's roots from the 'Cologne' series of engines, whilst the aluminium alloy cylinder heads were of twin camshaft design (per cylinder bank) and 4v per cylinder. First seen in the Granada range in 1991 the unit originally developed 195bhp and 203lb/ft. At the time, Ford claimed that no other normally aspirated 3 litre engine could better the torque figure. Mahle pistons were used to give a compression ratio of 9.7:1, con rods were modified for increased strength and the crankshaft was 'fillet rolled' to improve stiffness, whilst balance weights were added to improve overall smoothness. All engines were hand assembled at Cosworth's Wellingborough premises.

For the new 1994 model Scorpio, the Cosworth engine was further modified. Significantly the quad camshafts were now driven by twin simplex chains, as opposed to the previous single duplex one, a 'new variable resonance' inlet system was introduced and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) was introduced to reduce NOX emissions on light loads. The cylinder heads were also modified and a the new fifth generation EEC V engine management system installed. Resultantly, power output increased to 206bhp and 207 lb/ft of torque. With all of these changes, the unit was now designated as being type 'BOB'. To compliment the revised engine, a brand new gearbox was introduced, designated A4LDE, and this was also controlled by the advanced EEC V management system.

Performance was predictably brisk, with a top speed of 140mph and 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds or so. Combined with high equipment levels, a stable, secure and comfortable chassis, and high overall refinement levels, the 24v Scorpio Cosworth was a genuinely nice executive car.

This particular car is a real rarity, purely based upon it's original, immaculate condition and very low mileage of 36000 miles. Typically well specified, it's equipment includes upgraded 12 spoke 16" alloy wheels, electric windows, electrically operated and heated door mirrors, extended burr walnut trim pack with leather trimmed steering wheel, traction control, switchable sports/economy modes on auto gearbox, semi electric seats with pneumatic lumbar control, variable intermittent wipers, 'quickclear' heated front windscreen, front foglights, multifunction fuel computer, delayed courtesy lights operation, auxiliary warning lamps for low washer fluid, low coolant, high coolant temperature, graphic information module with 5 way door ajar and low ambient temperature, and a centre console with padded cover.

All in all a very nice car that must not in any way be confused with typical (much cheaper) examples. Whilst it still makes a very nice vehicle to be used on a daily basis it is almost too good for this now, and perhaps it would be nice just to use on special occasions. Thanks to it's Cosworth heritage, and the very real scarcity of similarly nice examples, this is a car that can only appreciate in value and will continue to become more 'special' as the years go by.
