Dark green Saab 96 V4 - better than original? SOLD (1972) | | | Not for sale - it has been sold via a Car and Classic Free Ad | After 5 years of ongoing restoration, Hugo is for sale.
Three years ago I paid over £2500 on fixing the rust of 30 years, finishing with a repsray in the original colour. I was careful to fix the original panels, rather than replace them with NoS or glassfibre ones, which rarely fit properly. I also had the wheels enamelled in cream, and they looked so good I have left off the hubcaps.
Mechanically speaking, Hugo's engine and gearbox was smooth and well maintained when I bought him. Since then I have fitted electronic ignition, a Weber twin choke carb and a K&N filter, giving Hugo an extra boost of power and a much smoother gear change. Lowered springs from a rally car have been fitted to tighten up the suspension and lose a lot of the inherent understeer.
On a more maintainence level, I have had fitted a new twin core radiator to avoid overheating, replaced the freewheel and clutch and replaced the rocker cover and head gaskets.
Other little bonuses are the fitting of rare, optional extras such as headlight washers, clock, as well as a good stereo and speakers.
I have just had over £900 worth of work done to Hugo to fettle him for sale, including all new tires, fixing a couple of rust patches and a brand new Jetex sports exhaust.
He is now totally rust free, running amazingly, and with a full MOT.
