Sunbeam Rapier Pillarless Coupe Series V. For Sale (1966) edit C130541 | | | 1966 Pillarless Coupe Sunbeam Rapier Series V Low mileage.
Rarely do these wonderful cars come onto the market … especially a low mileage example having covered only 73000 miles from new. This is the rarest of all the Rapiers, a stunning series V which has had one owner for most of her life.
I personally ‘rescued’ her from Southern France where she had been dry stored in a barn. It is RHD having originally been a UK manufactured car.
Initially, I worried about driving the 400 miles to Paris and then on to the UK. I needn’t have worried. She cruised effortlessly at 75 mph and I can honestly say that I enjoyed the journey tremendously, although I was constantly distracted by numerous French drivers on the motorways who waved enviously at me as they drew level to get a better look.
Whenever I stopped, I was surrounded by French chaps and I tried answering their questions about ‘la magnifique voiture Anglaise.’
Continuing towards Calais the following day, and just for fun, I floored the accelerator once on an empty stretch of motorway. Would she still achieve the magical ‘ton’? She did! At this speed, I was fully expecting her to shake, rattle and roll; surprisingly, she took it completely in her stride without even the slightest steering wobble. Bravo!
In total, she polished off the 850 miles to London effortlessly and literally without a murmur achieving a healthy 28-30 MPG … incroyable!
So now she is for sale and a better example would be nigh impossible to find. She’s not concours but certainly not far off. The new owner will be delighted with her and can certainly enjoy her as an everyday car with no problems keeping up with modern traffic.
No overheating problems, no nasty noises from anywhere and a truly comfortable ride. Excellent tyres, new exhaust, good chrome, wonderfully shiny and unmarked coachwork, crisp interior and mechanically excellent.
Come and have a cuppa, some biscuits and take her for a spin. I would say that the first astute person to view will certainly purchase; so to avoid disappointment, don’t delay as at this price, she’s an absolute bargain … plus she puts a smile on your face every time you drive her. Voila.
British registration will be done ASAP and DVLA tell me that the car will get back her original number plate back from 1966.
