Although all new and just introduced in the previous year, Ford’s Thunderbird underwent significant improvements in 1956 in both performance and convenience. With the steering adjusted, the rear springs softened slightly for a better ride, and improved weight distribution, the 1956 Thunderbird had better balance. Visibility improved through the hard top due to the addition of the now classic porthole. From a convenience standpoint the 1956 model featured a 12-volt electrical system, much needed fender vents for interior cooling, and more trunk space thanks to the stylish continental kit.
The 1956 T-Bird’s performance capabilities were proven at the Daytona Beach Speed Week by beating all the American and European competitors, except one. In 1956 terms, this year’s Thunderbird was safer to drive. Motor Trend magazine presented its Car of the Year award to the entire Ford line-up for “progress in automotive safety.”
Offered here is a fully restored Thunderbird painted in the most rare of factory colors – Metallic Thunderbird Grey, which was available only in 1956.
Desirable options and conveniences fitted on this example include power steering, power brakes, power windows, a hard top and the larger, more powerful 312 cubic inch V8 engine.
First restored in 1984, the T-Bird was then re-restored only a few years later by the current owner to bring it back to original factory specifications. This high point Thunderbird was meticulously maintained over the ensuing years and continued to receive many Best of Show awards including one at the AACA Grand National, the AACA James Melton Cup award as well high recognition at the Meadowbrook Concours d’Elegance.
Cosmetically, the Thunderbird is in exceptional overall condition. The contrasting red and white interior remains in very clean tidy overall condition, as is the gleaming chrome, engine and bay. Mechanically this pristine example needs nothing and is understood to be a fit running and driving example.
This fantastic Thunderbird, offered for sale from its longtime collector owner and enthusiast, is a unique example that is a standout from the rest in its metallic Thunderbird grey paintwork and exceptional overall condition.
