1971 Mercedes 280SL Silver on Tan driver w LHD

- 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL,
- A Solid California car.
Miles:167k

- One of approx 830 models built, this beloved car was bought from the original owner, a close friend of ours, in 1987.
- Car has always been well-driven, exceptionally well-maintained, and always well-loved.
- Unique in that tan leather for interior (seats, dash&trim, door panels) was provided by Hermes.

- Condition: Service records/references available with original owner's manual, etc.
-- As part of a major engine/body/interior restoration in the mid-90's,
- we changed original MB sliver-blue paint and white-leather interior to Porsche-silver/tan Hermes leather.

-- Another significant ($12K+) engine, mechanical, and systems over-haul was completed in 2008.
- New tires, 2 extra hubcaps.
- Of course, complete/specific details about car's current condition are available upon request.

- Car sold as is, and you are welcome to have a qualified mechanic check it out.

-- Note:
Given some of the questions being asked, I feel I should point that this car has always been a "driver's" car, as compared to a "collector's" car. It has always been exceptionally well-maintained, but I have always driven the car and maintained the car - paint and interior colors in particular - for my driving pleasure, not in anticipation of having a pure original.

It's a gorgeous car, but it is not for a purist. There's a good chance the person who will buy this car will be of like-mind.

Nonetheless, here's what I know:

We purchased the car from the original owner and good friend, Mary Drake, in 1987.

Mileage is approx 167,000. It has always been garaged and has always lived on the west coast, mostly in San Francisco.

We have many of the original service records between 1971 and 1986, as well as handbooks, etc. Records between 1987 and 2001 were lost, but during that period Pete's Mercedes in San Francisco maintained the car, they know the car well, and they would be happy to confirm that the car was regularly- and well-maintained.

The car was in storage in my brother's garage outside of Sacramento between 2003 and 2007. When it was brought out of storage in 2008, approx. $12k of work was performed to bring the car up to speed. This work and all work since was performed by Tom Stephens of Stephens' Mercedes in Sacramento, CA, and these records are, of course, available to a serious buyer.

I don't know what an independent assessment report is, but you'd be welcome to have the car inspected at your expense.

Also, don't know about collision reports, but in the early 90's I was rear-ended by a truck that came in over the trunk lid. The impact forced me into the car in front of me, also causing damage to the front end. At that time, Dawydiak Classic Cars in San Francisco did the repairs. I had the body taken down to metal and had the MB light metallic blue paint changed to Porsche silver.

At that same time, I had the MB white leather interior changed to the saddle color you now see. The leather was purchased from Hermes.

As far as things that are currently in need of repair or rebuilding:

- there is a hesitation in shifting to reverse, and I was told that the transmission has another 10-15 thousand miles on it and will then require a rebuild.
- tachometer has been disconnected due to a whining sound. I have been told it needs to be rebuilt.
- thumb lever on the fresh air valve is broken off. valve itself works fine.
- there are two paint cracks on the hood, as well as the radiating cracks from the hood's badge (as pictured.) Some kids sat on the hood several years ago, ugh!
- the original Becker radio is in place, but has not worked for 20 years. there is Radio/CD player in the glove box.
- as you can see in the pics, there is some cracked and broken plastic around the headlamps.
- we have never been able to get the rear window defroster to work.
- as this vintage of Mercedes is want to do, there have been trunk leaks, and we have always stayed on top of this to prevent rust on the trunk floor.
- I prefer the clean look of the trunk lid, but believe I still have the "280SL" original chrome badge that was on the trunk.

Here are all the pictures I have at present. Sorry, but some of the damage pics were taken on a rainy day, as it was the last day of my last CA trip.

This is pretty much everything I know about the car.

Anyone with real interest is welcome to speak with Pete's and/or Stephen's as to the maintenance and condition of the car.
- Any further information would need to be provided via a third-party inspection, either on-site (Newport Beach) or within a close radius of the car's location, and any further inspections would be at the buyer's expense.
