1937 A very elegant and fast Riley 2.5 litre sports touring car For Sale
This car, which started life as a 16/4 Blue Streak Kestrel was rescued from a field many years ago then purchased by a well known Riley expert and engineer. I gather it was in a very poor state and virtually devoid of any bodywork. He restored the chassis which he then sold to a new owner who asked him to build a Riley RM series 2.5 litre engine in the absence of a 16/4 unit. This is a logical choice as it is a direct development of the original twin-cam hemi-head engine. It is also, by good fortune, a bit more powerful and it mated readily to the original three speed plus overdrive gearbox. The new owner commissioned a professionally made 4 seat sports-tourer body in the style of the March Specials built on some 9 and 12 hp Rileys during the 1930s.
Riley themselves only made one open tourer on the 16/4 chassis which was the Lynx with registration number BTR 408 which was first owned by naval officer, racing driver and garage proprietor Hector Dobbs. This car compares very favourably with that Lynx (which I was fortunate enough to handle the sale of a few years ago) and given Riley's enthusiasm for producing a variety of different models and styles it is quite easy to imagine that it could indeed have been a production car. It is certainly stylish and well built, it goes very rapidly, it handles nicely and it looks very elegant - everything a Riley should be.
