| 1929 An elegant Vauxhall 20/60 coupe For Sale (C17558) | | | http://www.racecar.co.uk/driveon/details.asp?VehicleID=223 | | The 20/60 was the first really new car to emerge from Luton after General Motors took over the financially insecure Vauxhall Motors Ltd in December 1925.
Although GM influenced, it was still very much a Vauxhall and the then current advertising campaign made much of the fact that the cars was comprised of 97% British materials and were built by British workmen, furthermore the six cylinder overhead valve engine was designed by Laurence Pomeroy's successor at Vauxhall, designer Clarence.E.King.
This particular Kingston Coupe is in really very smart condition inside and outside. Mechanically it is generally very good though a couple of items will need attention. The bodywork is very sound with a really super exterior paint finish and a very smart interior to match. The engine is quiet and smooth and gives the car plenty of power for decent performance. The four speed gearbox, which is basically the 30/98 unit with a
central ball change rather than a right hand gate change is easy to use and the brakes are also very good, the car pulling up evenly without requiring excessive pedal pressure.
There is virtually no body rattle or shake so
the chassis and body frame appears to be in good order as well.
It is definitely a crowd puller which will stand out at shows but it also gives the impression of being a useable and comfortable long distance touring car. To summarise this is an elegant sporting coupe from one of the more expensive
British car makers which exudes quality and has just a nice little touch of American pizazz in its general style.
