BMW E9 3L CSL - SOLD SIMILAR REQUIRED Wanted (1972) | | |
| | | http://www.4starclassics.com | FOR SALE: Freshly restored, a beautiful example of the legendary CSL.
EQUIPMENT
RHD City Pack, Lightweight front spoiler, Lightweight rear bumper, Electric windows, PAS, Scheel sports seats, Alpina Momo steering wheel, Alloy wheels, Aluminum bonnet, boot lid and door skins.
EXTERIOR
This CSL was first restored in 2000 in an extensive body restoration that included new bulkhead box repair panels, inner wings, front wings, rear wings, outer sills, floor pans and A posts. The large amount of work undertaken has been documented with sales invoices and pictures during and after the restoration in 2000.
We purchased the car last year and while it had been safely stored in a garage up in Scotland it had remained unused and in need of some 4 Star TLC. We set about stripping the car and prepping it for another pampering in the body shop. The wood interior was sent off to a specialist while all the exterior trim and glass were removed and stored in a safe place. The car was then transported to 355 Restorations based in Dunsfold and led by Andy Coxhead the body was examined to reveal only two areas that needed minor repair work. After this prep work we were reassured that the body of this car was as solid as they come, it was now ready for 355s best painters to set to work.
Supplied new in Polaris silver the car still retains its original colour and after a comprehensive, thorough and rather expensive repaint, it looks stunning. The chrome on the car has been redone as have nearly all the rubbers, window seals and of course badges during this restoration. We are still waiting on some lower trim moulding strips from BMW and a reconditioned tool box from the States to add the finishing touches.
INTERIOR
The interior in a BMW e9 coupe is like none other, beautifully laid out with lashings of wood trim it is a wonderful place to be. We had all the wood removed, professionally veneered and lacquered to match the original finish. It sits perfectly in the interior and looks like new. All the heater controls work as do all the dash lights and steering column controls. There is no radio which means you have no choice but to listen to the howl of the wonderful 3L straight 6, it also means no large unsightly speaker holes in the door cards or rear parcel shelf leaving the interior untouched and how BMW meant it to be.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
After 52,000 miles the car retains its matching and original engine, it is also great to see it still on its original cylinder head. Mark Mclennan from MJF engineering gave the car a full service incl plugs not to mention supplying us with his expertise and experience by rebuilding this coupe! (something that he has done more times than he cares to remember in his 30 years fixing BMWs!). The fan clutch was replaced and all exhaust manifold gaskets, bolts and studs renewed. The car still sports a genuine BMW exhaust system, it's LSD and 4 speed gearbox. After a thorough inspection the car ticks over super smooth, runs at the correct operating temperatures and pulls incredibly well. It passed its MOT on the 20th November with flying colours.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The 14 inch original and genuine Alpina wheels have been fully refurbished and wrapped in new 195/70/14 tyres. New brake pads have been fitted all around and both brake servos replaced with freshly rebuild exchange units so the car pulls up very efficiently (for the 70s!) and in a straight line.
HISTORY FILE
Built on the 21st November 1972 and finished in Polaris silver the car was supplied new to BMW GB on the 27 November 1972. Being twice the price of a V12 E-type at the time and more expensive than a Bentley, like many CSLs this example remained unsold until an Ian Mcffat from Glasgow bought the car in 1977. It then remained in Scotland for the next 33 years during the ownership of keepers 2, 3 and 4 until it was transported down to our premises in Surrey in early 2010. There is a large amount of invoices for work carried out in 2000 during its extensive rebuild and again in 2010 with a stack of invoices from BMW. There are MOTs dated 1989, 2000 and 2010 to back up the current mileage of just over 52,000.
The car is due to feature on the front page of next months Classics and Sports car magazine.
