A very elegant six light owner driver Sunbeam saloon For Sale
That Sunbeam were one of the better makers of cars operating in England in the vintage era cannot be doubted and this lovely four door six light saloon only serves to drive the point home. It has their creamy smooth six cylinder engine attached to a four speed gearbox fitted with just the right ratios, a good strong chassis with decent suspension plus good steering and brakes. It has very attractive four door six light coachwork with a V-shaped windscreen and a low roofline which, combined with its recently refurbished maroon and black paintwork results in a very elegant looking car. There isn't a maker's plate on the body though there is a note on the file indicating that someone "in the know" thinks it might be Cunard or Carbodies. There is even a suggestion that the car might have originally have belonged to the poet John Masefield though that remains unresearched and unproven - whatever its origins it is a really lovely car!
A look through the file of invoices shows that it has had a lot of money spent on it over the years including work carried out in 2008 by Sunbeam expert Bill Barrott who built up a replacement engine for the car at some considerable expense (which no doubt accounts for its smoothness!) as well as fitting a new clutch disc and replacing the centre prop shaft bearing and rear axle halfshafts.
The interior of the car is just lovely with very high quality leather upholstery plus door trims, carpets and headlining all in a very attractive maroon shade which gives the car the comfortably opulent look and feeling normally associated with an English gentleman's club.
In conclusion I would sum up it up as being a typical vintage Sunbeam in that it is a high quality but understated and nicely mellowed car rather than being over showy or concours - maybe it is exactly what a good vintage car should look be like. It starts easily, it is very pleasant and quiet to drive and it gives the impression that it will just keep on going for as long as you like to wherever you like and it is very good value for money - can you
