VEHICLE SUMMARY
A beautiful, cherished example of the most economical version of the W124, with the much sought after 5 cylinder multivalve engine, which as many will know will happily run on vegetable oil (SVO) without the need for modifications. Infact many say these stoic old Mercedes Diesel engines will actually run on anything resembling oil!! Although performance is leisurely in comparison with modern common rail turbo diesel engined cars, the E250D will happily cruise at 80-90mph all day long and return very impressive fuel economy whilst doing it. Around town, with the automatic gearbox its so easy to drive and a vast improvement over the earlier 250D with the older 10 valve engine, however what both have in common is unparalleled durability and reliability.
Originally supplied by Brookes Mercedes-Benz of Dartford, its believed the car was one of their demonstrators/company vehicles, and was sold almost a year later in 1994, at 11,000 miles for whacking £27,100. Now, some 18 years on, she's now covered just 84,000 miles which is backed up by all the old MOT certificates as well as a stamped up service book containing 16 stamps. At this mileage, in the scheme of things, it can be considered to be hardly run in; its well documented that these engines can cover at least half a million miles without problems, and this generation of Mercedes Diesels are regarded as probably the most durable engines ever produced.
The car has just passed its MOT with absolutely no advisories, and has just been serviced with the two lower ball joints having been replaced…this was simply precautionary measure as the W124 's, especially the diesel engined versions with their heavier front end, tend to be quite hard on them. The auto gearbox fluid & filter was also changed too. In addition, a set of brand new tyres has been fitted, so the car is in tip top shape.
Bodywork on this car is exceptional with absolutely none of the usual W124 issues (jacking points, battery tray, inner and outer wings are all rust free) helped immensly by the fact the car has been waxyoled by previous owners. The Imperial Red paintwork has a deep lustrous shine and shows no signs whatsoever of any fading.
Everything works on the car, including its original Blaupunkt Boston CC22 Tape/Tuner. It fires up on the first turn of the key when both warm and cold, and for an old generation diesel its remarkably quiet, infact on the move you would know it actually was a diesel.
So, in summary, this is a gorgeous low mileage example of one of the most stoic vehicles ever produced. I know more than most, W201 190D's & W124's Diesels in this condition aren't exactly growing on trees these days, and you could easily spend hundreds of pounds driving up and down the country in search of another. Most of these cars were bought as motorway "mile munchers" and/or have been hard used with maintenance usually skimpted on, so the vast majority are well past their best. Not this one, it really is a cracker, so if you're looking for a good one of these, don't miss this, as they might not be another along for a long time.
