Riley MPH LeMans Special For Sale (1934)Only 2 MPH LeMans Specials were made by Riley and after competing and winning their class at LeMans in 1934, both of these were dismantled and the components used in other cars. Today, only a few recreations exist based on the design of the originals. This car started life as a Riley Kestrel and was used in the early 90s as the basis for a Special in the style of the ‘34 MPH LeMans cars. The car has a replica TT Sprite chassis using the original cross-members from the Kestrel. The aluminium bodywork was specially built. The engine, gearbox and running gear are all original Riley. The engine is the delightful 6 cylinder, 14/6 which has been professionally rebuilt as a fast road engine. Unlike the two original LeMans cars, this car uses an Armstrong Pre-selector gearbox, rebuilt with close-ratio gears. This makes it a very easy car to drive both on the road and competitively. The axle is standard Kestrel but fitted with 4.5-1 differential. The cable operated brakes and steering are original Kestrel. The car has many other nice features such as cord-bound road springs, an original scuttle mounted oil tank, hand-operated fuel pump (not connected) and reserve fuel supply switchover. Paintwork is nicely patinated and complemented by excellent chrome-work. The whole car is finished to a very high standard and drives superbly. It may look good in the photographs – it is even better in the flesh….. It has a VSCC Buff Form and is classed as a Riley MPH LeMans Special. The V5C identifies the car as a 1934 Riley Kestrel.
