E21 BMW 316 Automatic, white, restored For Sale (1982)

The Basics: It's a 1982 BMW E21 316 automatic with 92,050 miles, tax and test both until October, it's been structurally fully restored so is either a blank canvas or a great OEM project. THE BIGGER STORY .................................................................................................................. Despite owning too many cars, I bought this car about a year ago for one simple reason - I knew I would never have the opportunity to own such an amazing condition E21 again! The chap I bought it from had spent 3 years and an embarrassingly large amount of money having the car professionally restored (only recently did he admit to me that it owed him just under £5,000!). His goal was to make this car the best 'original' E21 in the UK. .................................................................................................................. THE CONDITION .................................................................................................................. The bodywork is pretty damn spectacular - sure, the front kidney grill is dented (haven't got around to replacing it) and there are some light scratches on the sunroof, but I'm being really harsh because it is beautiful. The photos don't do the car justice. ................................................................................................................... It is obviously a 'restored' car, the super-shiny paint gives that away, but it gets more positive comments than any other car I own... even I have to admit that in terms of pure 'cool' it beats my '64 Mustang hands down! On Twitter it has been a car that everyone covets! .................................................................................................................. When I bought it, it had been sitting up for a couple of years (the last owner moved overseas just after the last of the bodywork was completed and left it in his parents' barn) so it ran a little rough from lack of use. I had a brand new carburettor put on it and a few other odd jobs and I was away! .................................................................................................................. Sadly, I haven't been able to leave well enough alone and have re-done a large portion of the brakes and a whole host of small jobs that now mean I have spent over £1,700 in the last year making sure it drives 100% perfectly... I didn't realise that it was so much until I just added it up (I must be as mad as the guy who restored it!). .................................................................................................................. Please don't think it's fast like a 323i - it is definitely more suited gentle and considered cruising as opposed to more urgent getting-about. But it drives VERY well indeed and I've enjoyed driving it around London where, in the sodium glow, it transports you back to the 80s. .................................................................................................................. The interior has not been touched and could do with a refresh. The seats are original, the carpets would benefit from being replaced and the instrument panel has a couple of cracks, but everything works... well, except for the stereo. .................................................................................................................. THE SERVICE HISTORY .................................................................................................................. As you can see from one of the pictures, there is a LOT of history. There seems to be every single scrap of paperwork from the first owner's 21 years with the car and I have all the receipts for my work, plus loads of MOTs, the original service book, the manuals, 2 sets of keys... the list goes on. .................................................................................................................. THE REASONS .................................................................................................................... I don't really have to sell the E21, but it's the sensible thing to do... .................................................................................................................. You see, I have my first kid on the way and it seem appropriate to replace what is actually my 4th car with something family orientated my wife is happy to drive. .................................................................................................................... I will be very sad to see the little guy go because he's been very reliable, and everyone loves him. *Huge sigh*
