World Cup Austin Maxi Rally Car. For Sale (1970)1969 World Cup Austin Maxi. MCE 7G
The 1970 Daily Mirror World Cup Marathon started at Wembley Stadium on Sunday April 19th 1970 and ended on 27th May after more than 16,000 gruelling miles at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City. Of the 98 entries, 4 were Austin Maxis, two works prepared cars and two similarly prepared privately entered cars with works support. Car No 20, MCE 7G was entered by Marshalls of Cambridge prepared by Peter Baldwin at Marshalls workshops using many BL Special Tuning parts and driven by BMC works driver Tish Ozanne, navigated by Bronwen Burrell and Tina Kerridge.
When retuning from South America MCE 7G was lightly used on a number of events before entering many years of storage, preserving the car in its very original condition.
MCE 7G has been recommisioned over the past year with new MOT , battery, exhaust section parts, wheel bearings, hydroelastic units, brake parts, oil, filters, battery, electrics, etc etc. SPECIFICATION:
Original modified shell, BL fibreglass doors, fibreglass bonnet with Les Leston pins, Perspex side windows, front and rear tow hooks, BL sumpguard, bull bar and mesh. Modified boot with welded tailgate, opening rear hatch including boot straps, shovel, dust cover, temporary windscreen. Equipped with original 25 gallon Autovita bag tank dated March 1970 refilled with new foam, located with original Irvin straps, separate fuel gauge tank in boot, Alloy Monza filler.
Rear underseat tool storage with modified Britax belts as retaining straps, black roof lining with net storage, John Alley Alloy roll bar, ST modified seats with rear storage, Britax inertia front and fixed rear original seat belts, rear panel shelf mounted hydrolastic suspension pump with fluid reservoir in boot.
Works dashboard with Halda Twinmaster, Smiths 8 day clock with P lights, Lucas rev counter, 240kph rebuilt Smiths speedo, oil pressure gauge, battery condition gauge, original 40,000ft aircraft altimeter, cabin oxygen feed pipes and regulator, push button start, heated rear window. 4 Lucas dash mounted fuse panels, Lucas two pin power socket, battery cut off, braced steering column and Intertech steering wheel, door map pockets, rear door mounted tool roll.
Normal Hydrolastic suspension with auxiliary Koni shock absorbers, and heavy duty displacer units, Hydrolastic pipes within the coachwork. All correct and original.
Original works spec wiring loom powering 4 x correct type Lucas Fog/Spot lamps on lamp bar with Lucas wiring plug, under bonnet relay/fuse panel, front map light, rear maplight, hand held Lucas 576 inspection light, Lucas 700 Wing mounted lamp, Maserati air horns with additional passenger dash button, double ended SU fuel pump, twin washer bottles for twin wash systems,
Genuine original magnesium Minilite wheels, 2 spares on roof with original works fixings, New 185/70 x 14 competition tyres,
The original 1500cc engine was replaced after the rally with the new larger 1750cc engine and improved rod gearchange. 5 speed gearbox. The engine was rebuilt about 10 years ago and has covered few miles since.Original Spec Twin SU 1½ inch carbs. One piece Downton exhaust/inlet manifold, twin coils.
There is the V5 registration document and this car is taxed and MOT’d until July 28th 2012.
Spares include suspension units, brake parts, rear lights, drive shaft joints, fan, wheel flanges , speedo cable, etc etc.

There is a large file of photos. receipts, rally bulletins, articles, original World Cup and Maxi posters, and picture of the car in development and on the rally etc etc.
This car is totally unique with an amazing history and presented today with a depth of patina and character. There is only one other World Cup Maxi left which is the Prince Michael car in the Gaydon Museum. This car was built in close cooperation by Peter Baldwin with BL Special Tuning and contains many of its original modifications . It is the original shell and the interior is largely original, it is very rare to find cars from the 1970 event in such complete and original condition. MCE 7G was resprayed its original colour 7/8 years ago and the original stickers replaced. This is a real piece of history ready to be used on the roads....
