This splendid looking Maroon-coloured E-Type Coupe started life as a Federal specification 3.8-litre car. On repatriation from California in the '90s it was subjected to a respray, general overhaul, conversion to alternator and negative earth plus the fitting of a 4.2-litre engine. On acquiring the Jaguar some 10 years ago, the vendor replaced the first 4.2-litre engine with another one, reputedly complete with 'big-valve' head. The original gearbox was jettisoned in favour of a five-speed Getrag unit, the car converted to right-hand drive and the front brakes uprated with Coopercraft ventilated discs and four-pot callipers. At the same time the radiator was also upgraded and a 16-inch cooling fan fitted. More recently, 'GAS 971' has been treated to a further bare metal respray, new seats and 6.5J wheels in place of the 5J originals.
The vendor believes the body panels are all original and nowadays regards the bodywork and paintwork as "very good" and the interior trim, gearbox and engine as "good"; though he notes that while the XK motor "shows more than healthy oil pressure, it does consume some oil". The E-Type is being sold complete with a CD of some of the work done, the original Moss gearbox and a few other spares, plus an MOT into April 2013 and will be driven to the auction.
