AM DB7 Volante: English Lakes, Borders, Roman Wall For Hire (1998)
The Aston Martin is a dream of a car for the groom and Best man to arrive at a wedding, and for couple leaving the reception as man and wife.... all welcome, unless you are called Mr and Mrs James Bond !!
However, it is THE perfect car for touring the English Lake District, the open roads of the Scottish Borders or touring across Hadrian's Roman Wall. All are a short drive from the car's Cumbria base as North Lakes Classics is in Carlisle less than 30 minutes from all three.
Peter, who hired the Aston Martin recently, found that it is also the perfect car to be in on a sunny afternoon when having to travel through Edinburgh's traffic jams on festival days! Now that's an alternative use for a DB7 Volante.
"Shall we take the Aston?" Has that certain 'ring' about it...
The Aston Martin DB7 was described by Jeremy Clarkson in 2003 on 'TOP GEAR' as 'The Number 1 best made thing by man'.
The design by Ian Callum captures the very essence of Aston Martin. The elegant shaped radiator opening and the consequence compound curves of the front of the bonnet can be traced back to the DB3S of the 1950s. The sculpted interior with it's predominate curved lines, is trimmed in Connolly leather and the electrically operated front seats are designed to hold the body in place while making the most of cornering capability.
During June 1997, AM unveiled a unique DB7 for Alfred Dunhill, the leading English company specialising in clothing and accessories for a discerning clientele. The exterior was painted in an exclusive platinum metallic - also applied to the wheels; the interior was in a contrasting Charcoal Connolly hide piped in silver grey. In addition, the traditional Aston Martin walnut veneers were replaced with attractive brushed aluminium panels.
Despite a projected build of 150 examples, a mere 78 cars (coupe and Volante) were actually produced and G14 EFJ is Dunhill #5.
G14 is probably the easiest car to drive ever made and the powered hood (roof) can be raised or lowered in seconds. However, be prepared to be surrounded by questions whenever you stop as the car is so visually stunning. A car ideal for a birthday present on that special mile-stone birthday perhaps...
You want it to keep it a secret? The Aston Martin's garage is anonymous. Your loved one can press the button to 'reveal it' waiting behind the roller shutter.... this makes a brilliant extra surprise.
