Many elements of the Continental R design were first manifested in Rolls-Royce's “Project 90” concept car, exhibited at the 1984 Geneva Motor Show, which would prove to be a mock-up of a future Bentley coupé. The enthusiastic reception led to development of the vehicle for production, incarnate as the Continental R 1991: based on the Bentley Turbo R floor pan, with a new, aerodynamic coupé body.
Upon debut at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show, and the Sultan of Brunei purchased the show car on-site. The “Continental” designation recalls the Bentley Continental of the post-war period, and represents a sublime example of what many have come to regard as the last of the proper, hand-built Bentley Continentals. This last Type R shares with its illustrious predecessor from the 1950s a style at once exquisite and modest; to drive it displays a beautiful balance, being surprisingly sporting and taut on the road, and also consistently comfortable and refined. The wonderful interior still has a lovely ambience that the German prestige competition has never been able to match.
This example – finished in Diamond Blue Silver with a sumptuous parchment Connolly leather interior, compete with birds eye maple veneer – is a beautiful example which has covered just 59,800 miles from new; indeed the coachwork, interior and under bonnet all suggest in appearance a car of more recent vintage. On the road the Bentley is similarly impressive, bearing as it does one of the most elegant sporting shaped of recent times.
These Continentals now represent excellent value for money, especially considering that to buy one new would have cost in the region of £200,000! This superb example – supplied with a V5 document a year's MoT – combines power and elegance, something which Bentley motorcars have been doing for generations.
