The Rambler is in many ways typical of most successful early American cars including both Oldsmobile and Cadillac in that it has a long stroke single cylinder engine mounted lengthways in the chassis with the cylinder head to the rear and a large flywheel to the front linked to a two speed and reverse gearbox. These engines are surprisingly powerful and with their high top gear the cars can easily maintain a good speed whilst the low first gear will climb pretty well any hill you come across.

As first and reverse gears are epicyclic they don’t have a conventional clutch so driving is very easy, you simply pull the gear lever into first and open the throttle and off you go and when you want second you move the lever and it engages without crunching or any possibility of you missing the gear. To select reverse you just lean your foot on the pedal and back it goes! If you haven't driven one before you will be pleasantly surprised by how easy tiller steering is to use and it soon becomes second nature. As a further plus point the car also has very good brakes so you can enjoy its performance!

As you can see from the pictures, which don’t really do it justice, this car is superbly presented and it goes as well as it looks. I understand it does the Brighton Run with ease – talking of which it has been entered for this year’s Run. It is also going through the Veteran Car Club’s formal dating process and we have every reason to be confident that this will prove to be a successful exercise which will verify its long term Brighton Run eligibility.

Early American cars are very well built as they had to be capable of making long journeys and they also had to be easy to maintain in locations which may well be many miles from the factory or the nearest service agent as America is a very big country! These design principles combined with the fact that they are also very good value for money make them ideal for enthusiasts who want to use their cars on a regular basis.
