Incredibly rare, just eleven of these cars are listed on the Sunbeam register.
This car was stored for many many years before undergoing a stem to stern nut & bolt restoration a few years ago, with over £100K being invested. The engine is a 4.5 litre 6 cylinder side valve unit. It takes the form of two separate blocks joined by a common cylinder head. The engine on the car has been completely rebuilt with new or refurbished everything. As a result it starts instantly & runs incredibly smoothly in an almost imperceptible manner. Fuel is fed via Autovac & ignition is by magneto. An electric starter was fitted from new to augment the hand crank.
The car is finished in a deep burgundy over black. To the interior is black leather & matching black carpets. A black canvas hood in super condition covers the whole ensemble during inclement weather. Dual side mounts are fitted, along with a parp parp bulb operated trumpet horn. A Wilmot Breedon calormeter is fitted to the top of the radiator.
The car is festooned in brass fittings including magnificent brass Rotax lamps. The car sits on four artillery wheels fitted with brand new tyres.
Underneath the car is as good as it is on top. Literally every nut & bolt has been replaced to bring the car back to a close to new condition. On the road the car drives effortlessly with tremendous torque transmitted through a 4 speed 'box, the pattern of which is the reverse of the modern norm. Hills are taken in top with aplomb & little retardation unless the gradient becomes really steep. The driving feel of the car is somewhere between vintage Rolls & WO Bentley; softer then the Bentley but more sporting then an equivalent Rolls Royce.
Given the price of 4 1/2 litre Bentleys, this Sunbeam represents a lot of car for the money & a refreshingly different drive. The car is currently located in Somerset & may be viewed there by prior appointment.
