The 308 GT4 2+2 was a groundbreaking model for Ferrari in several ways; it was the first production Ferrari to feature the mid-engined V8 layout that would become the bulk of the company's business in subsequent decades, and was the first production Ferrari to feature Bertone (rather than Pininfarina) bodywork. The Dino 308 GT4 was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in November 1973 and featured angular lines entirely different from its curvaceous 2-seater brother, the Dino 246. The styling was controversial at the time with some journalists comparing it to the Bertone-designed Lancia Stratos and Lamborghini Urraco. The 308 GT4 finally gained the ‘Prancing Horse’ badge in May 1976 which replaced the Dino badges on the bonnet, wheels, and the steering wheel. The chassis was based on the Dino 246 but was stretched to make room for the second row of very small seats. The suspension was fully independent and the V8 engine was mounted transversely. The 2927cc, V8 engine was integrally joined with the gearbox and produced 250hp; it had an alloy cylinder block and heads with twin overhead camshafts. There were two series of GT4; the earlier cars featured a twin distributor engine and fog lamps mounted in the front valance. Later cars had a single distributor engine with fog lamps mounted behind the front grille.
This excellent, righthand drive, series II Ferrari was first registered in Northern Ireland in 1978. In December 1983, it was brought over to England and registered with DVLA. Finished in the traditional Rosso Corsa (Red) with cream leather interior, this Ferrari 308 was subject to a complete restoration in the early 2000’s before becoming part of a private collection of Ferraris and other sports cars, among this 2+2 seater`s previous owners include one of the foremost Ferrari specialists, Karl Verdi of Verdi London Ltd. The car has an impressive specification featuring a factory-fitted sunroof, air conditioning, original wide alloy wheels, full factory leather interior and stainless steel sports exhaust system. This eye-catching `prancing horse` has only 41,000 miles recorded from new and is being sold with a V5C registration document, a new MoT test certificate and ownership history dating back to 1983 including old MoT test certificates and invoices which verify the current mileage. The cam belt was also replaced less than 500 miles ago at the end of 2010. This is a very practical and comfortable car with longer front-seat adjustment and the four twin-choke Webers ensures starting the car is an unforgettable experience – well it is a Ferrari after all!
