Land Rover Series 3 109” Safari Station Wagon – 4 CYL - Project, No Tax or MOT

This vehicle was originally a factory fitted 6 cylinder. The vehicle history shows the previous owner spending many thousands of pounds overhauling the original 6 cylinder engine and indeed replacing with a ‘new’ 6 cylinder engine around 1993. 2 years later this 6 cylinder engine ended its life and the previous owner now quite annoyed decided to bit the bullet and buy a brand new re-manufactured 4 cylinder 2.25 petrol engine with an unleaded head from Turner Engineering at the cost of £1750 - receipt and paperwork are present for this. This engine was fitted in 1995. By 2006 the vehicle was in need of some TLC so the previous owner decided to begin a restoration in 2008. This restoration was never finished, and is pretty much how the vehicle stands today. It came into my ownership as the previous ownership has lost motivation with the project and wanted it to go to a good home.

This is an excellent example of a straight original Land Rover Safari Station Wagon with lots of history that will hopefully make an excellent project for someone.

Bulkhead

Bulkhead is very good. The passenger foot well has been replaced in the past. The driver’s side is original. The areas around the door hinges are very good indeed with some slight corrosion starting to come through near the passenger side top hinge. Areas around other hinges shown no signs of corrosion. The areas around the vents also appear to be fine.

Engine

The engine is excellent and sounds very impressive, and to me is probably one of the best parts of the vehicle.

The engine idles well and is very responsive. Zenith Carburetor fitted.

The Turner Engineering number is present on the side of the block. This is the same number mentioned on the paperwork. The radiator also appears to be in excellent condition. Note, vehicle can’t really be taken for a test drive as the exhaust is quite loose and very rusty. It does however move under its own power easily enough.

Gearbox/Transmission

The gearbox performs well with all gears selectable. It doesn’t jump out of any gears. The vehicle is fitted with the correct type heavy duty (Salisbury) rear axle. The front axle is also in good condition with Selectro Free wheeling hubs fitted. The swivels are also in outstanding condition with no pitting present.

Body

The body is very straight for its age. The roof has to be one of the straightest I’ve seen in a long time. All 4 side doors were replaced with new old stock in 2008. They are all exceptionally solid with no rust along the bottom edges. Please remember this is a 33 year old vehicle. The previous owner decided to replace the sills because the originals had suffered damage. A replacement cream one is loosely fitted at present. The other side is included in the sale. The safari roof is also totally straight all over.

Trim

The vehicle comes with all the trim you see fitted plus all of the original trim that was removed along with some addition spare trim (see separate photo). I would estimate there are at least 1.5x sets of interior trim in total. The interior headlining on the safari roof is largely intact with a very minor rip (less than an inch) towards the rear. The safari roof is also totally straight all over.

Suspension

All leaf springs appear to be in good order. As far as I know they are all original fitment.

Chassis

The chassis is very solid for its age with it having 3 new outriggers in 2008. The chassis number is present on the front dumb iron. The only let down and the main reason this is a project is that the vehicle could really do with a rear cross member. The rear cross member has been patched in the past, really its time it had a new one. The rest of the chassis is however solid making this is a worthy repair. A few patches will also be required along the main chassis rails towards the rear end.

Misc:

Please note this is a project vehicle/failed restoration.

Heritage Certificate included.

The vehicle is a runner, clutch and brakes do work (brakes could be better) so can be driven onto a trailer.

Collection from near Salisbury.

Cash on collection.

This vehicle is advertised elsewhere. I reserve the right to end auction early.

Viewings highly recommend.

I have many more photos I can email if required.
