Riley Brooklands Replica SOLD (1931) | | |
| | Several years ago my friends and I acquired an original ash, steel and aluminium Riley Brooklands body. To get this important historic relic back on the road we commissioned a replica chassis from a specialist supplier, and set about creating as original a car as possible. By extensive parts tracking over several years many more original items were collected, resulting in this wonderful recreation.
The original Riley axles, engine and transmission are from 1931 and the car has a very desirable Coventry registration appropriate to the model - VC8620. A restorable car was not destroyed in order to create this Brooklands.
The Riley ‘9’ engine has been rebuilt with Phoenix crank & rods, Newman cams, Omega pistons, new timing gears, correct oil and water pumps, and twin bronze bodied 1 1/8” SU carburettors. An original large capacity racing sump with ‘quick’ oil-filler is available, but not currently fitted. The Silent 3rd gearbox has the correct Brooklands remote gear-change and revised ratios, and the differential ratio is 4.77:1.
The brass rimmed instruments include a 5” rev counter, 3” road speed, plus amps, oil pressure and water temperature all mounted in an engine-turned dash. The electrical equipment is all Rotax of the correct pattern including Rotax head and side lamps with original lenses, Rotax cut-out and Rotax starter/lighting switch. Ignition is by a restored BTH magneto.
The chassis has been specified with an extra two inches in length. This makes the car accessible to larger drivers without structural alterations to the historic body frame.
She has been created to look as she would after four or five years of club racing, say in 1934, the year two Riley’s came 2nd & 3rd at Le Mans. She is not a Pebble Beach concourse winner. There are a few dents, and the radiator has a well used look, but she is a visual delight, and of course very usable too.
Having been enjoyed for three seasons since completion, this wonderful car is reluctantly offered for sale to make room for a Riley Big 4 project.
