Mercedes 300 SL Auto Blue 116K VG Condition For Sale (1986)Solely due to me overstretching myself time-wise I am selling my jolly nice Mercedes R107 300SL. Here is a quick run down of its details:
1) MoT until 6th May 2013;
2) Tax until 04/2013;
3) 116069 miles at the time of writing;
4) Four previous owners;
5) Very good all round condition including very nice bodywork and paint, good interior and spot on mechanically;
6) Excellent service history including MB Main Dealer stamped service booklet to 94K and then independent specialist, old MoTs, bills;
7) Original factory hardtop.
I bought this car because of its overall condition, very good history, attractive colour combination of petrol blue (I believe this is quite a rare colour)/cream sports check interior and the fact it is the later 300SL model in the R107 range. I have a thing for classics and a soft spot for the 80s Mercedes due to their build quality. I also like working on cars and the idea of floating about this summer with the hood down rather appealed. However, the weather just hasn't obliged and having four older cars, a one-year-old child and working really is just too much of a stretch. I really should have known better, but there you go.
Since buying this Mercedes in March I have spent time sorting out anything that bothered me as well as servicing the car. There wasn't anything major required, but quite a number of little jobs. From memory these include:
1) general servicing including engine oil (Castrol Magnatec) and filter (genuine MB), gearbox oil and filter (genuine MB), plugs (Bosch Super H7DC) and air filter (genuine MB);
2) replacing both door contact switches with MB parts;
3) replacing electric aerial with correct Hirschmann F459 model sourced from Germany;
4) cleaning stuck window winder motor;
5) fixing boot light;
6) replacing centre console bulb;
7) track down and repairing the fault causing the 'bulb out warn light' on dash;
8) new front tyres and spare (Avon ZV3 so they now match all round);
9) replacing the slightly damaged side trim (genuine MB part);
I did have this car for sale in Belfast, but thought there a better chance of selling it in London so I took the car on the Belfast-Liverpool ferry and drove down to South London. Absolutely no problems to report and I did the run non-stop in 4 hours 30 minutes. The car is now safely stored with my parents in Petts Wood which is about 5 miles from junction 3 and 4 on the M25 and about 10 minutes walk from the train station. I have had various classics over the years and feel I have a reasonable idea of what is good and bad. To save wasting your time I have written what I think to be an honest description of this Mercedes with details of anything of note. I too have been mucked about looking at badly described cars and aim to avoid any of this unpleasantness. I also have many photos, so please email.
Exterior
Very good bodywork with excellent paintwork. Panels sit well, are flush and smooth along its flanks and the doors close perfectly. There is one tiny pin sized dent to the offside rear arch and a couple of stone chips/marks which have been touched up, none of these distract. The car must have been repainted in the past as the overall finish is just too good to be original. This repaint was undertaken to an excellent standard as I genuinely can't find any of the usual evidence of a repaint save for the sills being painted body colour, not black as the should be.
The car has also received wax treatment to its box sections and good quality underseal to its underside. From what I can work out this job must have been undertaken over six years ago and is not some recent quick bodge to hide any 'nasties'. There has been welding to a jacking point undertaken to a good standard and, again, done some time ago.
The bumper chrome is generally excellent. There is one small split on the off side rear section which I don't think warrants any action otherwise it is spot on. All of the side trim and rubber bumper inserts are excellent. The alloys were refurbished before my ownership and remain in excellent condition. They wear Avons ZV3s all round including the spare. From the history I think the rears have been on the car for 8000 miles and the fronts and spare I put on and have covered no more than 800 miles.
Interior
Overall very good again. I must admit rather liking the cream Mercedes sports check and the car has optional occasional rear seats. If you've ever had a convertible you'll know why light coloured trim (preferably cloth) is by far the best option. Again in very good condition and the only thing I would point out is there is minor wear to the driver's seat base. It is certainly not holed and it doesn't bother me. I only noticed this on close inspection a month after buying the car. In case you're a perfectionist an inexpensive recover in the correct material is available from a company called D-Class who are well known for this work. There are also four small holes to the centre console where a phone was fitted. These don't trouble me, but again I thought I ought to mention it.
There is a Sony radio/cd player with good quality Alpine speakers to the front console. I replaced the electric aerial and motor with the correct and very hard to find Hirschmann F459 model which I tracked down in Germany.
In the boot there is a spare bulb kit, jack and first aid box. The boot carpet is clean and tidy.
Hood/Hardtop
The hood is in excellent condition with only very slight marks to the clear plastic sections. I can only presume it has either been replaced or had very little use. The factory standard hardtop is excellent too.
Mechanics
Very good and in keeping with a 116K mile Mercedes that has been correctly serviced. There is the original service booklet with 17 main dealer stamps taking it up to 96K miles in 2000. Thereafter, it was serviced by an independent garage until it was moved over to Northern Ireland in 2006 with 108K miles. The previous owner who I bought the Mercedes from stated that there was history from his ownership, but I can't find it and have never seen it. That said, when I changed the oil in May (using Catrol Magnatec 10W-40) the old oil was very clean verging on new and I don't doubt that the car was looked after for that period.
The engine bay is not show standard, but certainly clean, tidy and has an air of being well kept. I have given it a little clean, but decided at the point when I was sticking down a loose Girling brake label on the brake servo it was time to stop!
The engine is the well know 3-litre M103 12-valve, straight six. There are no undue noises and it is a solid 3 bar when hot when on the move and 1.5 bar at tick over in neutral. Before buying the car I contacted the SL Shop and they stated that so long as it is above 1 bar then such a M103 engine should be okay.
The gearbox is smooth and changes up-and-down when it should. I had the gearbox oil and filter (genuine MB item) changed professionally in June.
All other mechanical items are good too. It brakes sharply and in a straight line. The suspension feels taught with no undue noises. It passed its Northern Ireland MoT first time in May. You may not be aware, but the Northern Ireland MoT is the toughest in the UK and is only carried out by government run test centres. Also, they don't have advisory sheets here; it is either pass or fail.
I also have a hand full of spares that go with the car.
Electrical System
Everything works including all the little items such as all dashboard bulbs. I have carried out work to ensure this is the case including fixing the boot and glove box light as well as replacing a blown centre console bulb and the both courtesy light switches.
Paper Work/History
I have history for the first 110K and few miles I have done of its 116K miles. The first 94K being Mercedes main dealer. The original service history book and owner's manual are present together with a written history and supporting bills from my ownership. The previous owner told me this car used to be owned by a chairman of the BBC, although which one I don't know. The car was registered BHC1 until 2002. It now carries C10 STH. I have a print out of the original build sheet which shows the options this car came with.
Summary
A very good example of the more sort after later R107 300SL. It is certainly not perfect, but generally very good all round and ready to use immediately without fear of spoiling it. I haven't owned this car for very long, but this isn't indicative of anything wrong or a bad car. In fact I have spent quite a bit of time resolving any little niggling faults. It is well know that the 80s Mercedes were beautifully built and 300SL is a very good example of that. I would be confident that this would drive you home, wherever that is in Europe, without a problem and I had a cracking non-stop drive from Liverpool down to Kent.

Terms of Sale
Without wishing to state the obvious this is a privately owned car that is sold-as-seen. I am more than happy to help UK/European buyers that maybe interested in any way I can. I have previously sold other privately owned classic cars (from my parents' house in London) to France, Germany and Holland all of which got to their new home under their own steam. Full, cleared payment is necessary before the car is taken away so I presume it would either be via CHAPS payment or cash. Again, I would recommend that you view this Mercedes.
