With fewer than 1,000 U.S. Carreras ever built, these cars are becoming more and more rare and desirable as an affordable collectable early 911. Plus, with only 395 delivered in 1975, they are even harder to find in decent condition. And, it is exempt from all the California emission/smog laws. This particular example was a very rare special order. The car was purchased from Holbert’s Porsche Audi dealership in June of 1975. It was special ordered by a local enthusiast. It was ordered from the factory with a sportomatic gearbox. Only 19 Carrera Sportomatics were produced of which 13 came to the U.S.. We have the original bill of sale with a hand typed note regarding the rare option (see attached photo). Options included: Sportomatic Rear speakers Bilstein shocks Sunroof Leather interior Air condition Blaupunkt Stereo The total price for this Carrera new was almost $20,000. Over the next decade, the owner enjoyed the car as an occasional weekend car. However, the constant oil leaking of the anemic 2.7 liter U.S. 911/43 model engine and the failure of the sportomatic led him to look for an alternative. Fortunately, in the late 80’s, his shop found a very low mileage 1985 Carrera (less than 20k miles) engine and 915 gearbox. So, the swap was performed. By the early 1990’s, the car was sold to a soon-to-be Orange County PCA member. He purchased the car and brought it with him to Southern California. This owner was a gifted home-garage mechanic and proceeded to go through the entire car. His big concern was that because the engine was a factory replacement engine, it didn’t have any engine number stamps. So, he purchased a 1986 Carrera case and began to completely disassemble the engine and rebuild it with a factory number stamped case (#64G03456). It was then certified by the California Highway Patrol and given a (very difficult to get) California B.A.R. sticker (see attached photo). Over the next 10-years, this owner went through the entire car improving anything he could. The following modifications were performed: Turbo tie rods Carrera adjustable rear spring plates Aluminum front cross member Nylatron front A-arm bushings Nylatron rear spring plate bushings “Charlie Bars” – sway bars made by Charlie Spira: 7/8” front and 1” rear 25mm rear torsion bar (same as ’86 Carrera) Polished original Fuchs (7x15 and 8x15) by Al Reed German silverknit carpeting (original was red) Calibrated oil temp gauge and sending unit Porsche factory short shifter Extruded honed intake manifolds Enlarged throttle body Low oil pressure warning light system ’86 Carrera front and rear brake system (calipers and rotors) Steel brake lines Tachometer modified by North Hollywood Speedo Radiator type front oil cooler Aluminum sport clutch cover and new clutch disc Rebuilt A/C compressor with new R-134 A/C Barrier hoses by Steve at D&S Air ’86 Carrera double pass rear condenser Bronze pedal bushings Reinforced rear sway bar mounts Bump-steer modified front steering rack 993 mirrors Hella headlights Carrera cabriolet engine mounts Over $8,000 just in parts was invested during the 90’s. By the late 90’s, this owner had purchased a 993 and was distracted. So, his last work was to remove the engine and perform a top-end rebuild with new valves before selling the car. The current owner purchased this 911 about 10-years ago as a fun weekend car. She enjoyed the car for the first few years. Then she became busy with marriage and kids. So, the car was relegated to the garage where it saw less and less use. Finally, before letting us help her sell the car, it had a thorough inspection and over $1,600 of services were performed. The father and son team of Tony and Marco Gerace at TLG Auto in North Hollywood (www.tlgauto.com) went through the entire car. Here is what they did: Compression test: (1)190 (2)190 (3)190 (4)180 (5)190 (6)180 Replaced both inner axle boots Replace all shifter and ball cap bushings Major Service: Adjust valves Replace spark plugs Change oil (Brad Penn) Replace oil suction hose from tank to engine Check/adjust timing and fuel mixture Inspect brakes/fluid Check alternator (remove, clean, and install): weak and will need to be replaced Repack/tighten front wheel bearings Remove, clean and reinstall front sway bar (was found to be loose) Fix oil pressure sending unit After going through the car, they found it to be a very nice driving example. The body was checked with a paint meter. It showed that the car had been completely repainted at one time but there were no signs of filler or other poor repairs. The car wears its original body panels including the very rare A/C equipped Carrera tail. The exterior of the car looks great with minimal signs of use (typical small rock chips). The tires are old and need to be replaced. The interior is very original (except for the carpet replacement 10+ years ago). The leather dash has no cracks, but it is warping. The headliner has some expected discoloration. The rest of the leather is showing its age with cracking on the driver seat. But, it is still original. All the gauges work. In fact everything works as it should with the exception of the electric antenna which doesn’t go up and the a/c which blows, but not cold (hasn’t had the freon recharged in 5 years). This Carrera comes with two keys, original spare, most records from new, original bill of sale, tool kit, and owner’s manual.
