The Franklin Car Co. was established in Syracuse, New York in 1902 with more than 150,000 air cooled cars being produced between 1902 and 1934.

In 1930 the Company introduced the Series 14 Airman cars which featured a Six Cylinder OHV engine with a capacity of 4494cc. producing 95 BHP at 3300rpm. And a quoted maximum speed of 80mph. The 147 has a wheel base of 132 inches and benefits from full elliptic springs and four wheel Lockheed hydraulic brakes. Franklin were noted for quality and innovative engineering and the engine features forged Duralumin con rods, seven bearing counterbalanced crankshaft, aluminium pistons and nickel- iron detachable cylinder heads. The airplane type engine delivered the greatest power for cylinder capacity of all automotive powerplants in 1930. The engine was used to power airplanes as well as cars with excellent smooth performance and endurance associated with airplanes. Dramatising Franklin’s incomparable performance and definitely proving air-cooled superiority, are a long list of American road records held by the 1930 Franklin, including coast to coast in 69 hours and 31 minutes and 150 mile speed and endurance record up and down Pike’s Peak.

The car was purchased new by the Newton family of Boston, Massachusetts . Letters from James- Elliot Newton, the son of the original owner mentions that the car was purchased by his father as a present for his mother and came with a warning that it was a very powerful car compared to the other family cars – a ’25 Franklin and ’27 Stutz. She used the car as her regular transport until 1949. In 1956 the car was purchased by Walter Church, Plattsburg. NY. And by 1960 was in the ownership of Glen Robinson, Ontario, Canada who undertook the complete restoration of the car and it was eventually imported into the UK in 1990.,

The car is in very goods overall condition, well patinated as you would expect from an older restoration. Recently fitted with four new Firestone tyres and new hydraulic brake washers all round.

Reluctantly offered for sale since space is required for two other large vintage American cars awaiting restoration. Transport can be arranged at reasonable cost and help given with international shipping. The car is fully imported into the UK with V5 Reg. Document. It comes with numerous letter, documents & handbook. The Franklin Car Club has an excellent website offering comprehensive support to owners.
WOULD CONSIDER PX. FOR SMALLER CAR
