Standard Vanguard Diesel Estate for Spares/Repair For Sale (1963)1963 Standard Vanguard (Six) Diesel Estate for sale in need of complete renovation or for spares.
The Standard Motor Company made Britainís first diesel production car by fitting the 2.1 litre diesel engine used in the Ďgrey Fergieí tractor in the 1954-55 Phase II Standard Diesel Vanguard. When the Phase III was launched, a number were fitted with the 2260cc OE.138 diesel engine (also designated 23C and fitted to the Ferguson FE35 tractor) and these pre-production vehicles were exported to gauge the overseas market. For whatever reason, the Phase III Diesel was never offered as a production car and the pre-production batch were mainly given to the Massey Ferguson reps to drive around in. The car I have for sale is one of those cars Ė sort of... The original car was written off in an accident some years ago and was rebodied, and the engine has since been changed, too. The key bits do remain, however.
Whatís for sale: The Vanguard Estate fitted with factory-made engine mountings to suit the diesel engine (this car is fitted with the very rare Girling disc brake optional front end), an OE.138 engine is fitted but is partially stripped, thereís a four-speed and overdrive gearbox, and a quantity of spare parts for the car, listed below.
The condition of the vehicle is poor Ė Iíve owned it for over 12 years now, meaning to get around to restoring it, and itís really gone downhill. The outer body panels are possibly saveable with a lot of patience I think (everyone has a different perspective though), except for the rear valance possibly, the bulkhead area is sound, but the there are significant holes at the ends of the sills/rear of the front wheel arches/front of the rear wheel arches, and the kick-up over the nearside rear axle has crumbled. I personally think itís repairable but would take a lot of hard work and welding.
Car parts Ė 1 off NOS nearside front wing, 2 off NOS front chassis members (handed - 'Y' shaped), 2 off S/H rear doors in fairly good condition, brand new or reconditioned radiator, 3 off S/H seat backs/bases, 5 off new Camac tyres, 4 off part-worn Avon Turbospeed tyres, 1 off front cross-member fitted with drum brakes (the disc brakes are great in theory but have no self-servo action, hence the need for a vacuum servo, but that in turn necessitates the use of an exhauster/venturi, which isnít really in keeping, so this cross-member keeps things simple), brand new front suspension trunnions, various new rubber window seals, spare windscreen, etc.
The car itself is probably worth about £250 but with the new panels, tyres and spares itís worth £450. If you wish to make an offer, please contact me. I have a spare engine and lots of spare bits which I'm happy to sell separately.
