1971 AUSTIN 1300GT (ADO16) - IMMACULATE (1972) SOLD
There aren’t too many Austin 1300GT’s remaining and this must be amidst the best examples left out there. The speedometer reading is showing some 37, 000 miles but it has only covered around 4, 000 miles since it was extensively and expertly restored. It looks good enough to have featured as the 'Cover Star' on the May 2012 edition of Practical Classics.
It has been very carefully stored since the restoration and thus retains all its lustre, finished in beautiful Bronze Yellow (the most popular GT colour) with the typical 13GT black vinyl roof. It is in immaculate, show ready condition - ready to go. Naturally, it comes with a current MOT and its free tax disc. The tyres are pretty well like new.
I’ve been around the classic car scene both as an enthusiastic observer as well as an owner for a good many years now and have never seen a 1300GT as nice as this! Most tend to be rusty, tired looking relics that would need an awful lot of expensive restoration work done to get them into any sort of serious ‘show’ condition. This one’s already there – just turn the key and off you go! It's noteworhy that the 11-stud, 1275cc, A-Series engine has been rebuilt during the restoration process and consequently it all works like new (Documented rebuild - bills etc).
Modern poly bushes and better brakes mean that the car delivers a crisp, tight driving experience - arrow straight on the road. It really is a proper little gem.
I bought this car some two years ago and have since fitted a full stainless steel exhaust system; at some considerable cost - just last February (2013). The stainless exhaust looks supoerb, being the right shape and proportions for a 1300 GT. I haven’t bodged it with a great big untidy looking thing on there, it follows the original exhaust layout - as we used the original system as a template.
The interior is utterly immaculate with all new carpets and original black PVC seats. The dash hasn’t been drilled to add toggle switches or any additional warning lights by any yesteryear boy racers. It’s as if it came from the factory, complete with a wood effect (original) Austin gear knob. It has a lovely original head lining too that hasn’t sagged - nor has it aged too drastically, reataining its origianl white colour (hasn't gone brownish with age). It must have been a smoke free car - and I don't smoke myself. The ashtray is like new with no evidence of any nasty cigarette butts having ever been stubbed out in there!
The car is totally rust free, the chrome is smooth and shiny with no pits or tarnish. Even the underside is finished superbly in spotless body colour with brake and suspension components detailed. The subframes have been powder coated and are finished in spotless satin black. Better than new!
The engine bay is also immaculate bearing the autograph of one Mr Paddy Hopkirk on the bulkhead. How come or why the legendary Irish, Mini Cooper driving, rally man ever came to autograph this car – I really don’t know.
The only thing that hasn’t been working is the fuel reading. But I do know that it’s down to a faulty tank sender – because I have already checked and noted that the gauge itself works perfectly. I have only used the car to attend classic car shows (either short journeys or on a trailer) and have simply topped the car up with adequate fuel for any runs that I’ve done on those rare (dry) summer days. I should have attended to this when I had the stainless exhaust fitted - but it slipped my mind at the time.
Recent work done: New CVJ gaiters, top and bottom joints (driver side) - full service.
The only reason for sale is because I now fancy an open top tourer. This being my second classics season in the 13GT ...
I'm open to any serious offers. Of course, viewing is recommended. The car is as described.
