RENAULT - 1969 Renault R8 Gordini 1300cc LHD (R1135) For SaleGordini competed in Formula 1 from 1950 until 1956, with a brief return in 1957. Gordini also enjoyed major success in Formula 2, also working with Renault as an engine builder entering Renault Gordini Cars at the 24 Hours Le Mans between 1962-1969.
Gordini tuned engines for Alpine, a rival sports car manufacturer closely associated with Renault in this period. The Renault Dauphine was the start of a Gordini/Renault association seeding the iconic cars that followed. The Dauphine was replaced by the R8, the first version of which was the R1134 Gordini with a tuned engine developing 90bhp. Notably sharing the same engine as the Renault Alpine A110, but weighing much less.
Extra power was obtained using the Gordini crossflow head and twin choke 40mm side draft Solex carburettors. The car used a 4 speed close ratio gearbox with dual rear shock absorbers and uprated springs.
In 1967 the R8 Renault Gordini received a major face lift which was when the 1135 was born. This is one of the most collectable Renaults from this period and is a fantastic investment opportunity!
The R8 Gordini was originally only available in blue with two white stripes. The R135 gained two extra headlights which were Cibie Oscar driving lights recessed into the front grill. All importantly the engine was upgraded to 1255cc (rated at 110bhp.) The crossflow head was retained however two side draft Weber dual choke 40mm carburettors offered much improved torque.
The original gearbox was developed to 5 speed, and top speed increased to 110mph.
Less than 2000 of these cars were produced in 1969 and for known surviving cars today the number is much less. The original R8 and R135 are hotly regarded to escalate quickly in price following in the wake of prices seen with the Alpine A110.
This is a left hand drive car offered for sale retaining its original navy blue paint and livery.
This has been a competition car from the early 70s with full FIA papers and was developed for motorsport to ĎPeriod Group 3í specification in itís early life.
In 2003 the car was totally rebuilt under the management of AKK Motorsport in Finland. Fresh FIA papers were issued in Denmark where the car has frequently undertaken a number of hill climb and rally events.
The history file for the car portrays a clear audit trail of the carís competition pedigree and previous ownership and clearly displays the carís outstanding motorsport preperation.
Imported into the UK in August 2013, this genuine R1135 has been behind closed doors for the winter and was pulled out of its barn in Scotland in early January, by Phil himself.
The car offered for sale is now being professionally prepared by PCC to ensure 100% reliability for its new owner. Anyone planning regularity rallies, historic stage rallying or winter rallying should really consider this car. Of course, it is equally suited to hill climb circuit events like the Tour Britannia for example.
The car is light and feels very quick! Power is excellent, with the engine revving strongly and the handling fabulous! From quick light steering, oversteer is predictable and very easily induced! The closely matched ratios of the Gearbox are a delight too!
As mentioned when this car was developed to Group 3 specification a front mounted radiator was fitted, further improving weight distribution and cooling. A Kenlow fan with manual overide also offers further peace of mind. (The car of course will still be supplied with the original rear tray and radiator assembly.)
An extensive spares package is available which will include many original R8 steel panels and heated front and rear windscreens.
This R8 sits head and shoulders from many other cars for sale.
