ROVER P5B COUPE 1972 SOLD

Rover P5B Coupe
Burnt Grey over Rover White
This car was first registered in July 1972; so nearly 42 years old and obviously road tax exempt. I am the fourth owner and the current mileage is just over 76, 000 which is verified by service records from new
She passed the MOT on 10th April this year with one advisory “slight oil leak from power steering pump”. This is a very common problem it unusual to find one without a leak.

I purchased from the previous owner in November 2010. He acquired the car in May 1988 and used it regularly for a few years but then it was consigned to spend many years in a lock-up garage. Before moving under its own power it was trailered to my home for recommissioning work. This involved:-

Draining the engine oil, running twice with flushing oil and refilling together with new filter.

Then, amongst a hundreds of little items requiring attention, the major jobs entailed :-

Replacing both cylinder heads with second hand equivalents which were skimmed and refurbished.. (One head was irreparable because of metal erosion caused by a blown head gasket.)
Replacing water pump.
Fitting new flexible brake hoses, overhauling the front brake calipers and the brake master cylinder.
Fitting new front brake pads, new rear brake shoes with new hydraulic cylinders and, of course, a complete change of fluid.
Fitting new rear axle oil seals, draining and refilling with oil.
The engine was given new air cleaners, flame traps, coil, spark plugs, points, condenser, plug leads and new oil pressure switch.
The carburettors were overhauled and fitted with new jets and needles.
The mechanical petrol pump was replaced with a rear mounted “Facet” Silver Top and under bonnet pressure regulator.
The fuel tank was removed, flushed and cleared of all muck and debris.
The cooling system was drained, flushed, back flushed and refilled with 50/ 50 blue antifreeze having replaced most of the hoses.
Auto transmission checked for colour and smell and kick down adjusted. Topped up together with PAS. .
All grease nipples attended to and moving parts lubricated as necessary.
All four door cards removed and window winder and lock mechanisms lubricated. All doors sprayed inside with “Waxoyl“.
Full exhaust system replaced with stainless steel.

At some point it was discovered that the both the rear chassis legs to which the springs are attached had corroded badly and although covered with patch welds they had no structural strength.
Also, the rear inner wings were badly rusted together with the boot floor corners. Additionally, the rear springs were in poor condition and sagging.
New replacement panels were sourced from a specialist Rover parts supplier and pair of springs found locally from a P5B being broken and sold for parts. The springs still had the manufacturer’s grey paint and sticky labels on and they had obviously been fitted in very recent years.

Welding work was carried out to a very high standard. All welds were treated with weld-through primer and all exposed metal spray coated with underseal. A complete photographic record of each stage the work was made and placed on CD.

Mechanically she is now very sound. The engine starts easily and runs well delivering its power seamlessly through the auto box. The servo brakes with discs up front are reassuringly effective and the power steering makes light work of manoeuvring a large heavy vehicle.

The black interior leather has been fed numerous times to bring back its suppleness and colour and is good condition with some parted stitching on corners. The overall effect is very little affected by these few defects. The headlining is all intact. The transmission tunnel carpeting has been replaced but the remainder is original and worn in some parts but neatly hidden by overmats.

The tool kit is present with no missing items. The wood fascia and door cappings are in very good condition.

There are “ET” headrests up front and matching ones at the rear.

The radio is the original Radiomobile which works well but a modern unit has been underslung with modern speaker pods hidden on the front shelf.

To sum up, this car has been subject to a major amount of my time and effort and some considerable expense to bring it up to its current condition.

The paintwork is best described as presentable and acceptable and not up to show standards.

All five tyres (four Kumhos) have good tread and the Rostyles are in reasonable condition with the odd mark where chrome is missing.

She is a delight to drive with effortless power, has considerable presence on the road and is a constant reminder of how luxurious motoring could be four decades ago.

So if you want to own a P5B Coupe but are put off by thoughts of hidden rust or poor mechanicals, then perhaps you should consider this one. The remedial work on body and chassis has all been done and to prevent any problems in the future the whole underside has been undersealed and doors “waxoyled“.

There is a large history file from 1986 to date and the Rover “Passport to Service” booklet with service stamps from September 1972 to August 1978.

I welcome viewing but for those who are too distant I will be happy to provide many more photos including some of the restoration work.
