| The MGBGT to look at - For Sale (1970) edit C51919 | | | For 25 years up to 2006, I had a Motor Engineering and Restoration business where some eight employees and myself carried out MOT testing, servicing, repairs, maintenance, bodywork and restoration. At my insistence, our work was to a very high standard and although we worked on all makes of car and light commercial vehicle by virtue of the MOT station, we specialised in MG. Although we worked on and restored every post war MG model, we saw (and restored) far more MGBs than any other model. You are possibly wondering about the point of my missive, well bear with me.
I gradually whittled the business down. I ended restoration with the completion of a major one on a TD. For the last few years, I worked alone in a small two car workshop. I kept exclusively to MG, AH, Triumph and Jaguar mechanics and minor bodywork. One day a week, I lectured at the local College of Further Education in Automobile Engineering.
Anyway, one day in 1998, the MGBGT in the pictures came in for a service and here is the point of the forgoing. Besides owning my first B in 1967, I know the MGB inside out having worked on and restored hundreds. The one here was one of the best I had seen or driven for well over 20 years. It looked and sounded gorgeous and drove like a new one. All the ‘shuts’ (door, tailgate and bonnet) were better than ‘out of the factory’. The side moulding lines were perfect. Amazingly, it was completely original. For one of this age (or almost any ‘B’ now), not to have had sills and castles, front wings and rear quarters, is incredible. That work is all very well, the problem is the standard to which it is so often done.
When I learned that it was basically for sale, I grabbed it. Subsequently, due largely to ill health, the problems has been one of lack of inclination to use it. Now I am unable to afford it the sanctuary of a dry garage, it must go!
When I was in business and was asked if I knew of any MGs for sale (occasionally I did but we did not sell them), my answer was the same. ‘There is a lot of rubbish out there being asked well over the top for’. As time went on, that was more and more the case. I always offered to look at a prospect for a customer and often did. So often, there were problems everywhere one looked. Sadly, many bought on impulse thinking they were getting a bargain. They had always wanted one and I hoped they had been lucky but invariably they needed a small fortune spending to get them half decent. I could write a book on this topic!
The fact is that this one is simply a car to enjoy. You can tinker in the engine bay for something to do. The original bumpers and overriders are unmarked but would benefit from rechroming (new ones are cheap but not as good). If you wanted to show it at events, the paint could do with some work. Thats it other than to mention that it is a Historic vehicle Taxation Class vehicle (FREE Road Tax)!
Come and look at it and take it for a drive. If you are not familiar with the MGB but looking for a good one, bring someone who knows one when they see it!
If you have questions, would like to see it or want my phone number, email me at leon1212u@yahoo.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
