1967 Jensen Interceptor, mk1 [SALE PENDING] SOLD

History etc
1967 Jensen Interceptor, mark 1.
Older repaint by a previous owner that was colour matched to its original “Stratosphere Blue” factory colour. I have a recommendation from a UK specialist for an appropriate current paint if you want to more accurately match the original colour. The recommended colour swatch I got from a local source based on that UK suggestion had an additional ever-so-slightly greenish hue to the blue.
81st mark 1 car made and probably about 15 cars off of the Vignale factory production after production was moved from Italy to the West Bromwich factory in England in early 1967 once the Vignale contract was terminated and tooling taken to England.
Currently on the mark 1 survivor list at around #21 from a global total of approximately 250. I think around 6 to 10 examples of the mark 1s probably exist in the US with some off the road and others under restoration.
Registered on the first day of UK “F” plates on August 1, 1967 in the Central London DVLA office (based on the UL letters in the plate, and the dealership location (Guy Salmon which I think is where Stratstone Jaguar / Land Rover is now on Berkeley Square / Street in Mayfair)).
Copy of the factory and warranty file here from 67 to 70 (or thereabouts) to flip through: - details above
Jensen had no marketing budget in those early days so a lot of mark 1s were owned by celebrities or captains of industry, especially within the film industry where they were routinely provided for use in production shoots. This car was first owned by film director Richard Lester who produced the Beatles’ films “Help!” and “Hard Day’s Night” in the early 60s, then directed Julie Christie in “Petulia” (around the time he bought this car), and then some mainstream work in the 70s (notably Superman and the Musketeers). I tried to source contemporary pictures of the car but have come up empty. I managed to have a brief communication from Richard Lester and although he didn’t have any pictures he did reveal that prior to this Interceptor he’d had a 541 so he was familiar with Jensen.
Exported to the US in October 1986 by another British expat. I chatted with his widower wife last year on emails and he apparently was a massive petrolhead with a penchant for big motors. The car moved around from Virginia to Maryland in the following years, then was in New York state from 1997 to 2012 before coming to Northern Michigan.

I don’t personally do any work on the car other than an occasional wash and dust and topping up the fluids. I have a very reliable local classic mechanic who’s an experienced grad from the McPherson program. He’s made it a fantastic driver’s car for me, as follows:
Spring 2012 (after purchase but prior to delivery)
Before it was shipped to me, previous owner had the radiator re-cored.
Summer 2012 (after delivery)
Cracked Exhaust manifold replaced with a used contemporary mk1 replacement from a different car which had headers. New metal gaskets and bolts done at the same time. Manifolds sandblasted and painted a discreet dark bronze to tidy up the engine bay.
Carburettor rebuilt and new larger air filter assembly installed.
Registered in Michigan with same license plate number as the original 1967 UK registration plate on its front bumper. Will assign it to a Michigan resident buyer if that can be done.
Spring 2013
Multi-point inspection done.
Fuel cap rubber replaced
Transmission lines replaced
Fuel lines replaced
Brake lines replaced
Fuel gauge, voltage stabilizer, fuel sender unit and floater repaired, and new fuel filter
New stainless front brake calipers
Slightly wider Mk2 “driver” rostyles sourced and painted. Centre Jensen medallions added. Original wheels stored away which will come with the car.
Emergency brake repaired
Ignition Condenser replaced
Spring 2014
New stainless rear brake calipers
Suspension sandblasted, painted and refurbished with the ‘superflex’ brand poly bushings and new tie ends
Rear shocks replaced
New larger master brake cylinder added and bracket fabricated to hold it. Nice and confident braking over the previous stock 60s brakes.
Interior tarted-up: torn driver seat back cover replaced with a new cover from Rejen, new burl walnut centre console facias, contemporary radiomobile 70x (from 1969 I think) and redirad added, modern speakers added, wooden steering wheel refurbished, replaced one toggle switch, added a missing ashtray and a missing interior light.
Horn repaired
Replaced fuel vapour hoses in C pillar

Other points to note:
Looks like a previous owner put in cherry bombs. I don’t know what the original muffler setup should sound like, and purists may heckle, but it does bark up nice and roars like a proper Detroit lion.
Passenger side floorpan was patched by a previous owner, and showing some tiny bubbles in some areas
See this video for a walkaround and a startup which I did earlier in the season (use headphones to pick up that bassy burble): - details above. The video presents it nicely at that 10-20 footer distance but it’s not a trailer queen…. though saying that, it did come second in show in Frankfort, Michigan in June 2013 within the foreign category.

Test drives available at my discretion if you’re currently Hagerty insured with evidence of such sent in advance, or you’re an independent appraiser with proof of liability cover.

Will certainly make myself available to assist any respectful independent appraisers and/ or facilitate putting it in a trailer of your own booked transporter.

Sold as is and where is. Historical and recent service facts are off the top of my head and from a scan of my receipts and emails so I’m not making any representations or warranties as to their accuracy.

Jensen interceptor S4, 1987. It is no. 3/11 out of a total of 14 S4s, and one out of a total of 3 left-hand drive convertibles. The reason it’s 3/11 is that it managed to have both frame no. 3 and no. 11 at the factory before it was completed. It was originally sold to King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. The king bought 2 cars, ...
