| Alfa Romeo Spider S3 1.6 RHD reduced to pay bills! For Sale (1986) edit C53082 | | | Up for reluctant sale is my 1986 Spider 1.6. It’s the quite rare medium metallic blue, with a pale blue canvas hood and black vinyl interior. It’s MOT’d until June 2009, and taxed until the end of December 2008.
It’s a 1986 model, and was used in Germany up to 1989 when it was brought to the UK. I have e-mailed Alfa Romeo archives who have confirmed this, and I still have a copy of their reply.
I bought the car in Nov 2006 planning to use it as a summer toy the following year after a bit of light re-commissioning. However, I didn’t get motivated, so the car sat around for a while. This spring, I set to it and replaced the brake callipers and master cylinder with reconditioned items, and also replaced all the brake flexi-hoses and pipes. I also had to replace the alternator (recon) and fitted a new battery.
I also had to have a fair amount of welding done, mainly to the floors. When I stripped the interior out to inspect, I found that the inner sills were spotless, which I was very pleased about.
On the outside, the body is pretty good, but there are a few bits of rust breaking through, the worst being where I caught the rear wheel arch on a gatepost (pictured). There is also some rust coming through on the front wing above the bumper. Under the bonnet, the inner wings are in very good order, and have never been welded. The doors, bonnet and boot are solid.
The roof could use a bit of attention. The stitching on the back window had split, and had been allowed to unfasten, so the back window has had to be stapled in. The roof is rip-free, though.
The engine is good, makes no strange noises and starts and runs well. The gearbox is quiet and doesn’t crunch second, although it does catch first if the clutch hasn’t been down for a couple of seconds. The diff is quiet.
All in all, it’s a good usable car, that’s perfect for the sun! I’d love to keep it, but my wife is expecting our first baby, so I can’t really justify a summer car that I can only use on my own. This means I’m looking for something a bit more practical, but wouldn’t dream of asking for a deal on here!!! Or would I?!?
Price now dropped, before it goes into storage for winter.
