When the Lanchester Ten was launched in 1932 it was very well received by the motoring public, it particularly appealed to the driver who valued comfort and ease of operation over outright performance. If there was a criticism, it concerned the lack of power from its 4 cylinder 1203cc engine.
To answer this shortcoming the ohv engine with detachable cylinder head, was enlarged to 1, 444cc, initially still known as the Lanchester Ten, it was rated for tax purposes at 10. 8hp and later renamed the Lanchester Eleven (LA11). The increase in power was welcomed by the motoring press and by the lucky motorists who could afford to buy this luxury small car. Most left the Daimler works with six light saloon coachwork, a surprising number of which have survived into preservation.
This particular car is one of only four Mulliner 'Sports Saloons' (model 442) known to the Daimler and Lanchester Owners' Club.
In 25 years of attending motoring events, I have never seen another, even at Daimler and Lanchester specific rallies.
The Lanchester was fully restored by a mechanical engineer upon his retirement some 25 years ago and has been used sparingly since that time. Whilst not concours, the Lanchester is still in lovely condition, the paintwork gleams with that deep lustre that only cellulose paint can produce. The interior is almost as good as new and is very luxurious for a car of this type, the headlining, leather-cloth upholstery and deep pile carpet are all excellent, the woodwork is original and all of the instruments, including the semaphore direction signals operate correctly. The interior is particularly bright and the large glass area allows for exceptional all round vision.
Mechanically the Lanchester is in first class order, the engine and pre-selector gearbox are both quiet, smooth and free from oil leaks. The steering and gear changes on this car are particularly good, both have a very light action, which makes driving this 76 year old car delightful. The chassis and underside of the car are particularly clean and in excellent condition.
The 'Sports Saloon' has a boot mounted spare wheel and steel cover, the boot is surprisingly spacious, a useful modern feature on a thirties saloon, it also has a clever folding luggage rack incorporated in the rear bumper, this was an expensive 'extra' when the car was new, and today allows for the addition of a picnic hamper for those lazy sunny days out.
The Lanchester has recently been fully serviced, and benefits from a set of brand new tyres and modern, but easily removed flashing indicators (I find these essential for modern day driving, but know that some veteran drivers prefer to keep the car's appearance close to original).
This Lanchester has the advantage of being built upon a popular and very well designed chassis (the Lanchester10/ 11 was Daimler's best selling car throughout the 1930s), but has the advantage of having a very rare and beautiful coach built sports saloon body, which really lifts it from the crowd.
Genuine reason for very reluctant sale by genuine Lanchester enthusiast. Registered in my name and has been used throughout the summer season for high days and holidays, it never fails to raise a smile and attract an admiring audience, whether car enthusiasts or just interested passers by!
