| Rover P5 3-Litre Auto Saloon For Sale (1966) edit C57391 | | | Rover P5 3-Litre Auto Saloon 1966 - Will Sell to UK and Europe
Here for sale is my Rover P5 3-Litre; probably one of the few very good ones that remain. There is a longer description below, however, I highly recommend viewing the car. I have tried to describe it as best as I can, but it is 42-years-old and your opinions might be different to mine. The car is at my parents’ house in South London. Any questions, or should you wish to make an appointment to see the car then please telephone me – Peter - on the number supplied in this advert. If I am not in my Dad will gladly answer any questions too. Anyway, here’s a very quick summary to give you a general idea of the car:
MoT until 13th July 2009;
Tax (which is free in the UK anyway) until 05/2009;
96,568 miles at the time of writing;
Family owned since 1990;
Very good all round condition and rather original, including very nice body, good interior and fine mechanically;
A genuine UK car all its life with four previous owners;
Good history folder with lots of MoTs, bills, letters from previous owner, handbook, parts and workshop manual;
Car is located in South London/Kent Border.
This Rover was sold new to H.B. Jesse Ltd of Pangdean Farm, Pyecombe on the 3rd May 1966. It was then sold on to a John Gibbins in Hastings before ending up with a John Ted Rayner in 1972. Mr Rayner then had this car for the next 18 years and looked after it very well. It featured in Freewheel (the magazine for the Rover Sports Register) and won best P5 for three years in the mid-1980s at the South-East Rover rally. He then sold it to a friend of my Dad who wasn’t used to old cars and only had it for 6 months before it came into our family ownership in 1990. I remember going to Hastings with my Dad to inspect the car for this friend. My Dad bought the car in 1990 when it had approximately 86000 miles. My Mum then used the car for two years taking the mileage to about 95000 before the appearance of a Mercedes and the Rover has taken a back seat ever since. In the last three years it had been SORN (stored in our dehumidified garage) and my Dad wants the space back. For this reason and with much regret it is time for a new home. My Dad and I have spent the last month getting the car back on the road, having replaced the brake master cylinder and washer bottled, undertaken a full service, obtained a new MoT, tax and I had a couple of small bodywork defects rectified. Anyway, here is a more in-depth description of the car…
Exterior
Very good paintwork and no rust. The top half of the car (roof, bonnet, boot and top of the wings) still has its original paint. The bottom half has been repainted a couple of times. Due to a couple dents and a very minor bit of rust (to the bottom of the nearside front wing and offside rear door) I had some work undertaken last month. This involved two small sections of new metal being welded in and these panels repainted. I was rather pleased with the results and the spare paint comes with the car for touch-up purposes. The usual P5 trouble spots such as the D-posters, bottom of the doors and wings, and the front panel in front of the windscreen are excellent. There are minor marks to the body near the front indicators which I presume result from previous minor repairs. These have never troubled me. The car has been Waxoyl treated for many years. I know Mr. Rayner (aforementioned previous owner) treated the car and I have also on a number of occasions.
The chrome is very good. We had the rear bumper repaired (usual minor holes in each corner) and rechromed when we got the car. The rest is original and has the nice look of well polished and slighted aged chrome.
Interior
Highly original including leather and carpets. The leather is in particularly good condition with no splits or heavy creases. Ted Rayner re-coloured the seats, but this has since aged. The carpets are a little threadbare in places, but it only adds to the car’s original feel. There are over-mats to protect them from any further wear. Everything else is very good save for the rear most section of the headlining which sags a little and one section of material is stained where the rear seat meets the rear parcel shelf.
Mechanics
Fine in all areas. The engine is remarkably quiet– far more so than any other classic of the period that I’ve driven. The auto box changes are smooth (well as smooth as they ever are for a 60s box!) and the brakes, rear axle and power steering all behave exactly as they should. A number of spares are also included.
The tool kit is complete and the jack, wheel brace and starting handle are present. The boot has its original rubber matting and is in very good condition.
Electrical System
Everything works – headlights, rear lights, indicators, dashboard, interior lights, and clock (although it does loose time at quite a rate!)
Paper Work/History
A good bit of history comes with the car. Bills for parts and the occasional trip to a garage (when the work was not undertaken by my Dad and I) are present from 1990 as well as various MoTs, tax discs, and the original green logbook. A letter and photos from Ted Rayner (I wrote to him when I was about 20) plus three plaques from its ‘best P5’ wins can also be found. It also comes with original owner’s manual, parts and workshop manual.
Summary
As you may well know there are far fewer P5 3-Litres remaining than the V8 powered P5B. Good original cars are very thin on the ground with many being lost to banger racing or suffering from neglect when the cars were just cheap second-hand motoring. If you’re looking for a good 3-Litre then I would be surprised if this disappoints. For me this is a rather a loss, but I haven’t any space to keep it and my Dad wants his garage back. For what it’s worth I am also going to have to sell my E-Type Jaguar, but I am more sad about this sale! Ideally I would like a P5 enthusiast to buy the car as I know they would enjoy it. If you want to come and see the car, which I’d highly recommend, then please contact me – Peter. Also I have many photos and am more than happy to help buyers from Europe. Over the last few years I have sold my own private cars to France, Holland and Germany.
