1973 Porsche 911E IROC Prototype Targa. This fully restored, numbers matching car is one of two cars built by the factory for Roger Penske. Currently the car has 2,885 miles showing. The car was prepared by Mr. Penske and Mark Donohue at the factory in Stuttgart. The custom modifications include RS body flares and duck tail spoiler, preparation of the suspension system, special hill climb gearing and wider Fuchs wheels and tires. The car was originally silver from the factory and Mr. Penske painted it Sunoco Blue over the silver. The invoice shows Albert Blau as the original color. Mark Donohue describes this particular car in his book “Unfair Advantage” on page 287 and 288. He writes “He even had them (the factory) built him a car, so that he could see for himself what it was like. It was actually a Targa, with all the right Carrera bits in it. It had wide tires and fenders, a special motor and hill climb gears. He drove it for a while, as his personal transportation and then he gave it to his wife. I thought it was such a great car that I was even kind of jealous. That was the prototype for his IROC Carreras.” We have all the Porsche documentation for the built as well as transport to Michigan on file. The built invoice from the Porsche factory substantiates the changes on the body, suspension and gearbox, including a 40% limited slip differential. It does not mention any engine modifications. This 911 is also equipped with an A/C system which has been disconnected. The third owner, a well know Porsche facility in Tuscon, AZ, decided to commence a bare metal cosmetic and mechanical restoration during 1997 and 1998. Pictures of the restoration are on file. The car was at that time black and the owner decided to paint the car in the same way Roger Penske had the car painted. The 911 was painted silver over which the Sunoco Blue paint was applied. The car subsequently sold to the current owner in 1998. Jerry Woods went through the engine in 2001 and rebuilt the MFI pump as well as other sundry items. It has a little over 2000 ‘sorting miles’ after the complete ground-up restoration. Mr. Penske’s signature is under the gas lid. More information to follow. See http://www.carsauto.com for more pictures. Asking price is $250,000 or any reasonable offer.
