| Lancia Appia Pininfarina Coupe For Sale (1959) edit C60991 | | | Lancia Appia Pininfarina Coupe 1959
Imported from South Africa five years ago and UK registered this is a rust free, apparently never welded example of the Pininfarina bodied Appia which was based on the same wheelbase as the saloon but had an up-rated 53bhp Jano designed V4 engine. The Appia was significant in that it was the last Lancia to use the firm’s famous sliding pillar front suspension. Pininfarinas coupe version, with its trademark wrap-around rear window, was first seen in 1956 but this is the later type car with different rear lights based on the S3 Appia saloon chassis. It has the three-dial facia, floor gear change and separate front seats plus small +2 rear seats for children and a very impressive boot. Just over 1000 of these cars were made and only a handful ever came to the UK. I’m not sure if they were ever offered in right hand drive; this car is left hand drive. Inside it has had a retrim in cream leather and has a period wood rimmed sports steering wheel and a 1960s push button radio. It has a brand new factory exhaust with a fishtail tail pipe and the correct Michelin X tyres. Spares included in the sale include an engine, front and rear screens, instruments and headlamp bezels. The carpeting is none original but the correct, rather austere rubber mats are available from specialists.
Like all Lancias of this period the Appia is beautifully made and conceived and is much niftier to drive than the 1090cc engine suggests with a quick gear change and smooth, responsive steering. Pininfarinas efforts make the car into a real couture period piece that will turn heads in any company but would also be a practical free tax town car capable of 30mpg plus.
