Triumph Stag 3.0 1975. 87,500 miles.
MoT: 27/07/2009 Tax: November 08
One of my favourite films Withnail & I has a great line ‘I wonder if you can help us, we’ve come on holiday by mistake’ (Richard E Grant to Michael Elphick), something like that anyway.
Similarly, I have bought a Stag by mistake! … I was a bit quick off the mark for a replacement when I thought someone was going to buy mine so when, of course, they didn’t I now have two Stags.
Despite it breaking the Magic Fish price barrier, I still think this is good VFM. She is MoT’d until 27th July next year and taxed until the end of November.
The bodywork is not too bad (Sapphire blue), there is a bit of rust on the boot lid and the odd bubble around (door bottoms as ever) but there is certainly evidence of restoration work in the past and she looks good from a (not too far a) distance. Wheels are good and she has a new hood. The chrome work is also more than reasonable.
The car runs well and has the original Triumph 3.0l V8 engine. I brought her back on the newly acquired Magic Fish trailer, thereby killing two birds etc., so she hasn’t had the ‘full’ road test but no problems so far. Ride and handling are good and tight (certainly, tighter than my own Stag!). Automatic gearbox works as it should.
There is some history, a few bills but, more interestingly, a sheaf of old MoTs that show she has done 11,000 miles in 22 years, 3,000 in the last 15 so she is definite ready for someone to get her out on the road.
There are of course a few minor niggles, the temperature gauge doesn’t work, the hood frame needs fixed up on the near side corner and it suffers from the common Stag problem with the starter solenoid (which means you have to sit there clicking away until she decides to start. Not a major problem unless you are a) in a hurry or b) trying to impress onlookers as you drive away!). ) In any event, we’ll get these sorted prior to sale.
It’s worth a look to listen to the engine alone and, as the recently appointed Deputy Area Coordinator, membership of the Stag Owners Club will be compulsory for any new owner.
Finally, for any prospective Southern Irish purchasers, note she is more than 30 years old!
