Citroen HZ Panneaux Toiles extremely rare For Sale (1957)



I'm saddened that I've got to let this one go, but I've got another two H vans and my bride has said words. This is a split screen from 1957 which I bought as a standard van to restore. The previous owner, a nice chap from Doncaster, had said that the rear of the vehicle had leaked water in so he had put plastic corrigated sheets over the back to protect it. I naturally bought the van without seeing it, expecting the rear to be leaking from the seams - a common element of H-van character, so was bemused when I collected it. Some investigations later and I had the answer and had also dropped on an Eligor model of the van which I've shown in a picture. The model sits on a stand which is incorrectly titled "Citroen Type H - 1948 camionnette 1200 kg" A camionnette is open topped, with a frame structure covered in a tarpauline, what we would call a pick-up. Citroen HZ's were also originally designated 850 kg. So this van, split screened and Panneaux Toiles (canvas curtained), was probably a crew bus and is now a rare survivor. It would probably be unique in this country on the show circuit next year. Someone has previously lavished attention on this van. Both box section chassis rail structures seem in reasonable order. One can be seen in a picture, behind the two metre section of sub body structure which needs remaking on both sides of the van. Another picture shows the section on the other side of the van which looks like someone unwisely attemted to use as a jacking point. In one picture you can see unperforated sheet metal at the rear of the wheel arch which is common to all the arches. The omega sections behind the front wheels have been replaced as can be seen in a picture. All other external omega sections below the mid rib have been replaced although I would say further attention is needed. Plenty of h-vans are run with ratty bodies, which I believe this one is capable of if given more attention to what is basically a sound structure (unusual in itself). Mechanically I have little information beyond all fluids being correctly present, the motor turns over and it all seems to be present. Again someone has been busy here. There is evidence of at least a part rewire. The previous owner removed the rear brake shoes, which were binding. In picture 7 you can see containers in the back of the van which hold brake and other mechanical bits. I believe that someone is going to be richly rewarded for their input into this van. Do not kid yourself - plenty of input will be required. However, it is one of only a handfull of 1950's split screen h-vans in this country and possibly the only Panneaux Toiles.
