| Ginetta G4 For Sale (1982) edit C66826 | | | Ginetta G4
Here is my Ginetta G4 offered for sale. I have owned the car for a year but, due to not having the time and acquiring another project, I unfortunately have to sell.
The car was first ordered on 30 July 1982 (the first year of series IV production, chassis number - 41100) and I have a folder with all the original bills of sale etc (signed by K.R. Walklett).
It was returned to the Ginetta West End Motor works in 1986 to have the rear suspension system converted to race spec (Jaguar based IRS with inboard disc brakes). The works cars were running very successfully at the time in the 750 club road sports category.
The car was taken off the road some time around 1990 to be rebuilt but this never happened. It is basically complete but needs totally rebuilding and is currently in complete component form.
The chassis, which was galvanised when new, has been fully restored by myself. It has never been crashed and is now waiting to be built up. It has been fully degreased, primed and has had two top coats of satin black applied. The pictures show it as I received it and also painted as now.
As pictured I have also restored some of the suspension parts, the front wishbones are also galvanised..
The tub, doors and front / rear body sections are all sound but do need fully stripping and painting. The front section has the rarer flip up lights (Porsche 928 style) that look much better than the frog eye version.
There is a brand new windscreen to go with the car as the fitted one is cracked. It is worth noting that this car could be built with a fly screen instead as the screen section is bolted on.
All basic mechanical components come with the car, ie diff, brakes, prop, steering rack, anti roll bar, hubs, gear box (4 speed Ford RS (I’m told)), but they only need basic refurbishment. The diff and gearbox should be ok though as the car was fully working when stripped.
It has a full dashboard of individual clocks. It will need rewiring as the loom was cut out.
It comes with full weather gear (hood and side screens).
It has a stainless steel petrol tank.
It has a complete exhaust system including two stainless steel silencers.
It has no seats or belts with it.
It comes with a full set of Revolution light weight racing alloy wheels.
The car does not have an engine with it although I do have a fast road Ford Kent Crossfow 1300 dry sump engine with all ancillaries, including a pair of Webber DCOE 40s with K&N filters, Luminition ignition, adjustable rev limiter, aluminium dry sump tank and catch tank, alternator, starter motor, distributor and all oil pipes. This will be offered to the buyer for £850. This engine has been fully set up on a rolling road at a cost of £214 and has a fly wheel output of 108 BHP.
These cars were originally designed with either Ford Kent Crossflow (1.3,1.6) or the Ford Pinto 2 litre. This particular car originally had a Lotus Ford 1600 QED twin cam in it (long gone I’m afraid). It could easily be converted to a more modern engine such as the Rover K or the Ford Zetec. However if the car was to be used in competition it is much better to stick with the original spec as there are more options for race series eligibility. I have also seen these cars running Alfa twin cams in them.
This car would make a great way to get into G4 ownership as the 80s G4s go for much more reasonable money compared to the 60s ones.
The car is currently registered on a Q plate and is pre sorn.
It could be raced in the new HSCC 80s roadsports category, the Future classics series, or the new Ginetta Heritage series. Or it could make an excellent and fun road car.
