| Beautiful Citroen Maserati For Sale (SM) edit C69789 | | | This UK specification Citroen SM was built in early 1974 and sold new in the UK in the autumn of that year. It is one of 327 cars supplied new by Citroen UK and of course has the proper European style glass ‘nose’ with directional headlights that turn with the steering. It is left-hand drive like all but a handful of these cars. The last owner was the late David Chalkin, a great SM enthusiast who owned the car for twenty years. The last SM of his that came to market sold for over £23,000 and in fact these cars are now regularly selling for over £20,000 as the market begins to recognise their status as the ultimate Citroen with traffic stopping looks. This car is currently owned by a staff member of Classic and Sportscar magazine where it has also been written about.
The triple Weber, four camshaft V6 engine gives this car virile performance and a fine sound. The car cruises peacefully down a motorway with very little wind noise and driven gently can return well over 20mpg. The hydroneumatic suspension treats potholes and speed bumps with total contempt. This car has the most comfortable front seats you will ever sit in and the rears can take adults; there are no rear belts but these could certainly be fitted.
It’s a five speed manual genuine 61,000 car with the desirable full leather interior. This is a Weber carburettor example in really excellent overall condition. The panels are straight, all the stainless bright work is good I have had a large amount of recomissioning work done to the car by Citroen Specialist Tony Weston.
It has been in regular use over the summer and I have done 2000 miles, including two trips into central London. The total mileage is 62,000. It has been entirely reliable in that time and benefits, in fact, from regular use. Desirable features include the optional chrome sill trims, rare original push-button radio and full leather interior. I have had the following jobs done this year:
New front height corrector valve
New front brake pads
New cooling fan
New oil cooler pipes
New brake accumulator sphere
New fuel lines and fuel filter
Carburettors rebuilt
New air horn
New alternator belt and choke cable
Recent routine jobs have been tracking, wheel balancing, new track rod ends and new plugs.
The body is in excellent shape. All the bright work is good, and the interior is excellent with no splits in the leather but some wear on the driver’s seat. There is one mark on the headlining, one cigarette burn on the passenger side carpet. The engine is smooth, very flexible and free-revving. Combined with a beautiful, positive gear change the SM is a delight to drive once you get used to the highly sensitive steering and brakes. It doesn’t use any noticeable amounts of oil or water and quite smartly presented under bonnet.
It is MOT’d until April 2009 and taxed for 5 months. There’s a stainless exhaust fitted, Avon Turbo speed tyres all round and it comes with its original English language owner’s handbook and coveted Blaunpunkt Blue Spot push button radio.
I can supply a very large amount of spares with the car by separate negotiation. The car is open to any inspection and I am happy to put another 12 months MOT on the vehicle.
