A absolutely beautiful example of the now very sought after pre-facelift 190E 2.6. Originally supplied by Normand of Mayfair, way back in October 1988, making it among the first of the 190E 2.6's to be registered; it's also a rare pre-facelift 190E 2.6 too. These earlier W201's are now becoming very sought after as many purists prefer the cleaner, classic lines of these earlier W201's.
It was always said the M103 6-cylinder engine perfectly complimented the chassis dynamics of the W201, and made the 190E really something very special indeed. These were a very expensive car in their time, with prices starting at around £25,000 putting them beyond the reach of the average buyer, unlike the Mercedes of today when just about anyone can have one, as long as you can afford the monthly payments. It's also worth mentioning that the W201 190E 2.6 has also been recently voted, by a panel of motoring journalists, as one of the top ten best cars of all time; quite some accolade, and sure to bode well for its ever increasing credentials as a valuable classic!
I've personally known this fine car for nearly four years now, having sold it previously in 2012. I recently jumped at the chance to buy it back, as vehicles of this caliber are getting so very difficult to find of late. The previous owner said it had been the most reliable and dependable car he'd ever owned, and would probably regret selling it. He's been a very worthy custodian though, and has continued with the impeccable service history which now contains 32 entries, the majority from Mercedes main dealers and respected specialists. Also, worth noting that in 2010, after a period in storage, it underwent a full top end engine rebuild, including head gasket, carried out by Stewart & Wibsey, a respected Mercedes Specialist in Ely, Cambridgeshire, and costing nearly £2000. This obviously allays any future concerns about possible head gasket failure that can sometimes occur on the otherwise bombproof M103 engine around 80-120K miles mark.
Bodywork condition can only be described as exceptional, and with no blemishes to note. Jacking points and sills (one of the few MB weak points) are all in superb condition.
Mechanically, as with all well looked after Mercedes of this era, it's in excellent order, and it drives impeccably, and exactly as a well maintained 190E should.
I doubt there's many better pre-facelift 190's out there, so if you're looking for one of these, this one is well worth a look, especially as the W201 has really "found its feet" as a true classic in the last year or so.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website at http://www.mtsv.co.uk
