| Hyundai Pony Mk1 Saloon For Sale (1981) edit C70501 | | | I have for sale a beautiful example of Hyundai's Mk1 Pony. It is probably the only example left on the UK roads and if not, will most certainly be the best example available anywhere.
Until this model came along, Hyundai were building Fords and others under license and this Pony is the first model they actually designed and built. It combines everything good from their other cars. It has a Mitsubishi 1400cc 4-pot engine driving a Mk2 Escort rear axle through a Mitsubishi 4-speed gearbox. The front struts are Mitsubishi while the front hubs are Escort. The wheels are base model Escort, I believe, and I've fitted a new set of Mk1 Capri chrome hub caps in place of the standard black plastic centre caps and nut covers.
My Pony has only done 7600 miles. Everything about it screams 'near new car'. Under the bonnet it shines and when I recently removed the rear drums, everything in there gleamed too!
It has a couple of minor problems. The bottom, front corner of the driver's door has a small area of bubbling in the paint and there are 2 or 3 other chips here and there but I don't recall much in the way of dents or other blemishes which a car this age should show.
The brightwork is bright and dent free and the Clarion radio works through the dealer fitted door speakers. The interior is almost perfect with probably the only flaw being a damaged steering column shroud.
When I got the car, both offside door outer handles were missing. I remember back in the mid 80s visiting the main dealer during the winter every other week to buy a new handle for my first Pony. They were made of poor quality stuff. I have replaced all four on this car with brand new Ford Falcon items which I imported from Australia. Should be a lot stronger.
It will be a sad day when this car sells as I know that another like it will never turn up again. However, my large personal collection of mostly Japanese cars has expanded far beyond anything I can store properly and way beyond a sensible, do-able number so something has to give. This is a very rare opportunity for you to buy an incredibly rare car which is in incredibly good condition for it's age.
