| BMW 3.0 CSi Coupe For Sale (1971) edit C70525 | | | 1971 BMW 3.0 CSi. LHD. Here are some details: Dark Metallic Blue with brand new black leather interior. New black carpets, all wood professionally re-veneered, door panels re-sprayed by Leathertek, new leather on dash, instruments refurbished. Interior looks better than new. Seatbelts installed front and rear. Panasonic r/t. 4 speed manual with L-Jetronic Fuel injection. Electric rear windows. Disc brakes all round. Just had full service, new clutch, flywheel skimmed, new diff seal, new brake pads all round, original 14" magnesium-wheels just refurbished with new BMW decals. New s/s free flow exhaust system with 10 year guarantee installed. Car runs beautifully. Car came to SA in 1971 and lived in the Free State till the 90's when it moved to Gauteng. I acquired it in 2005 (on 184,000km, it now has 191,000km) and spent a huge effort and cost over the last 3 years restoring this amazing car to get everything to work - too much to mention. Now very rare, in excellent original condition. I still have the original steering wheel - just have one from a 635 on at the moment. Numbers match - VIN and engine 2211199. The car was originally a 3.0 CS, but was professional converted to L-Jetronic from an E23 728i (better system than the D-Jetronic as it can be set - had it on a hydrocarbons machine and it is now set up nicely). Starts first time, pulls really strongly. Disc brakes all round (as the 3.0 CS had - which the 2800 cs had discs only in front). The best part of the car is the interior - best of any of the 20 odd CS / CSL's I have seen - the engine is good - although it had done 191,000km. The car was originally Polaris Silver, but was sprayed dark metallic blue in the mid 90's - paint is still OK, but has a few minor imperfections.
Here is a list of some of the stuff I have added:
Late model RHS mirror (R1,500) - originally only had the left side mirror
Front Grilles restored and re-sprayed
Bonnet and Fender grills restored and re-sprayed
New Rotor in Dizzy
Stainless Steel exhaust system
All wood restored and re-veneered
New clutch / flywheel
New diff seal
New black leather with grey double stitching (in '74/'75 pattern)
New leather on dash, console and handbrake with matching grey double stitching
New black carpets (same as CSL spec) including boot
Speedometer and rev-counter repaired and calibrated
Electric aerial that works with ignition and radio
Refurbished 14" mags with new BMW decals including spare
Had missing chrome section at top of drivers window manufactured
New bonnet and window divider rubbers
Had missing brushed chrome section to left of steering wheel manufactured
Restore and re-spray heater control unit and steering column surround
Reconnect heater controls to ensure all working (previously none working)
Locate, restore and re-spray interior fan cover (in bonnet)
New interior Bosch fan
Restore gauges to look like new
Worn Suspension parts replaced - inner and outer tie rod ends plus alignment done
Flushed radiator and had serviced in 2005 and 2008
Replaced Outer headlights
Installed seatbelts (3 point retractable from E36) front and lap belts rear
Sorted out auto-electrical gremlins (was blowing fuses on electric rear windows and a couple of other items)
A whole lot of other things that I can't even remember
Everything in the car works and I have used it on an almost daily basis for the last month while my 745i has been in and is amazingly reliable. No accidents that I am aware of. Can't see anywhere that pieces have been welded in (these cars were very prone to rusting). In terms of what needs to be done - depends on the standard. For concourse condition (as most cars, a bare metal re-spray would bring it to concourse condition. However the paint is pretty good and has a few minor imperfections). Body is really solid - one or two small rust bubbles from washing over the years (this car arrived in the Free State in 1971 and made its way the Transvaal / Gauteng probably in late 90's) so pretty much rust free. Interior is absolutely perfect. Glass is fine - there is a crack in the windscreen (which is the original one!) behind the rear-view mirror - was there before I bought it - passed roadworthy as it is not in line of sight. Motor is good and unopened. If you really push it hard it will smoke a bit as the valve stems seals are seemingly hard after almost 40 years. General mechanical is perfect - had the front worn suspension parts replaced and lots of work done over the almost 4 years I've had the car. Starts first time, every time. It has let me down twice - and it took some time to figure out the problem - it just cut out. Turns out the one spring on the dizzy got broken at some stage prior to me buying it and some dodgy make shift piece of steel was made which didn't hold the dizzy tightly in place - so it broke the rotor twice. I have not put in a new Bosch rotor and got an original spring from BMW (for a whole R13) after costing R1,000 at the Auto electricians trying to find the fault... It currently has my spare set of 16" BBS mags on. I prefer the look of the E9 with 16", but some prefer the 14".
