1958 PORSCHE 356A CONVERTIBLE D For SaleThe 356 was the first production car of Porsche and many variations were built between 1948 and 1965. Except for the excessively rare 46 Gmünd cars manufactured in Austria for about two years, the Porsche 356 was built in Zuffenhausen near Stuttgart from 1950 to 1965.
Over those 15 years, four major model types are recognized: Type 356, Type 356A, Type 356B and Type 356C.
There are two basic 356 body styles: Coupe and Cabriolet, of the later it can be a Cabriolet, a Speedster, a Convertible D or a Roadster, with often a combination of those in the same year. The most special is the 356A Convertible D.
The Porsche 356A Convertible D model is arguably the rarest "production" Porsche 356 model ever manufactured for a full year (Carreras being special order cars not made in groups on the assembly line, and the T6 "twin grille" Roadster was produced for only a few months). Only 1,331* Convertible Ds were made between August 1958 and September 1959
The car we have to offer is a 1958 Convertible D which has arrived here from the USA.The car had been left for years in a mechanics garage who then claimed the car in lieu of storage charge. It was then bought by a man in Connecticut who had the car restored in the late 80's after which it was put into a climate controlled storage before finding a new owner in New Jersey. Finished in Ruby Red with black interior with red piping and supplied with black soft-top and tonneau.
Two of these have been sold recently at auction in Monterey where they made substantially more than we are asking.
