Supplied new by Drake & Fletcher Mercedes of Maidstone, and serviced by them and latterly by Jackson's Mercedes Poole, this is one of the best preserved facelift W124 saloon's I've encountered in a very, very long time. It was used sparingly up to around 2010, after which it lay unused in a dry garage for almost five years, which I assume was due to the owner falling into ill health, and eventually passing away. It was subsequently re-commissioned in early 2015, and sold by me to one of my repeat customers soon after. He's a serial car owner and true Mercedes W124 enthusiast through and through. He's also very particular about his cars, and likes to get them absolutely spot on. He therefore continued to spend an additional £2000 on it, having the work carried out by a respected Mercedes specialist, who replaced many items, some simply as a precaution, one of those being the all important engine wiring loom. However having recently retired, he now finds it necessary to reduce his car collection, so I didn't need asking twice whether I'd have it back. I think this is probably one of the very best facelift W124's available.
Finished in 512 Almandine Red with Mushroom Leather Interior, this is a simply beautiful colour combination. Both the paintwork and the interior are virtually unmarked and the lack of corrosion on the under body is simply amazing; it's obvious this has been a highly cosseted vehicle, which has been garaged throughout its life. This is also confirmed by the bright orange colour of the needles on the dials in the dash; these tend to fade to yellow over the years if the vehicle is kept outside.
Mechanically, at just 64,500 miles it's in superb order, and drives almost as you'd expect a new W124 to drive. The M104 6-cylinder 24 valve engine is by it's nature syrupy smooth and gives superb performance too. As this car was specified with the optional 5-Speed Automatic Transmission, motorway cruising is both very relaxed affair, and returns noticeably more miles per gallon than one would expect to achieve with earlier 4-speed auto.
Now, although I have the service booklet, which is stamped up-to-date, there is very little in the way of supporting paperwork up to 2015 (however there's lots thereafter) probably due to the car being the subject of probate after the owners death, however it's crystal clear that this car has had a small fortune spent on it by its previous owner(s) with all the problem areas usually associated with this model, having been already dealt with.
So, in summary, I would go as far as to say this is probably one of the best W124 E280's currently on offer, and is definitely a show car candidate. Sure, there are cheaper examples out there, but as anyone who knows these cars will tell you, with the W124 it's what you can't see that should really worry you, and many overtly smart looking examples are now afflicted, mostly unbeknown to their owners, with corrosion in jacking points, water drains, sub-frame mounts etc. Think of it like this, if you bought a lesser car to bring it to the standard of this E280, the total spend would be probably be more, and the end result wouldn't be as good; never has the saying "the price is soon forgotten, but the quality remains" been more true.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected, and I work very hard to ensure that when these cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such, in my 11th year of doing this, I have many repeat customers and a steady stream new customers coming along that have been recommended via word of mouth…this is the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
